My 8 year old lab had TPLO surgery this winter, and 8 weeks later she's running around like nothing ever happened. Hopefully it all works out for you.

It buys a lot of dogs, but not the time and effort that goes into training them. I've spent countless hours and many years working on hunting with my dog, and paying that kind of money is no issue if I can get a few more years out of my investment.

He's on a prescription joint supplement called Phycox, as well as Doxidyl, which is anti-inflammatory. I think these 2 combined are giving him just enough comfort to tolerate getting up to do his business. I also have an underbelly sling I use to hoist his back end up so it's weightless over any steps. Doing everything I can for him.

Oh, please, that’s not my point and you know it.

When I read your original post, it made me think back to an experience I had in Seoul.  I was wandering through a traditional market and came on a pair of dog carcasses in a meat case.  Similar to my own dog.  It just made me think about the different values people put on different things.  For you, $5600 on a dog repair seems  ... excessive.  It is, for you.

Be nice if staff cleaned up some of the trash in an approved fundraising thread. Not hard to spot...

Sent some cash your way OP!

If it makes any of the shit talkers feel any better, my 10 year old lab/pit cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $15k over 4 years in various medical expenses after she developed diabetes. Thankfully I had pet insurance so I was out of pocket less than $2k total that whole time.

Which brings me to my next point...

OP, once you get your buddy over this hurdle, I'd suggest getting some pet insurance in case of future health issues. My lab/pit was 9 when I got it for her and the next year is when she became diabetic. If it wasn't for that insurance, I couldn't have afforded the $2700/yr in insulin costs for her. It more than paid for itself.

I had her policy through PetPlan. I have my current GSD on a policy through them as well. Have had her about 3 years and, thankfully, haven't needed it yet. The topic of pet insurance comes up every so often on here and there are other companies besides PetPlan.

I will absolutely be getting him covered after he gets his knees repaired. I'll poke around in those threads and get some quotes from a handful of them.

Thank you!

If I felt there was much to get a second opinion about and I was skeptical of the X-rays, I would do this. Unfortunately, the bone displacement is as clear as day.

My options are to have his knees permanently relocated with screws and plates, or leave them displaced and only be able to hobble around for another 4-5 years while being in pain the whole time.

I've shopped the procedure price, and he falls right in line with other vets in my AO for his size and issue.

My girl blew out her ACL and something else..don't recall exactly what now...But vet wanted around 5k. I took her to Kansas State University because they have "one of the best" vet programs in our area. Drove her about 3 hours away to Kstate they had her about a week or maybe less. Only cost me 2500. I would have absolutely spent the 5k on her. She had plenty of life left to live...It was worth every penny to keep her kicking so to speak. Good luck!

Look into care credit also. I think you can finance interest free for a few monthsd maybe its a yeAr

Interest free depends on amount charged, from what I understand.

Be advised, interest is obscene if you don't pay off by the deadline.

My Boxer just had TPLO to the tune of $4600 two weeks ago.

Luckily Nationwide is reimbursing me $3700 of that.

$13/week for the insurance.

Good luck with your puppers!

There are vets that will finance . If you have been going to the same vet for the last 10 years I'm surprised he or she won't do a payment plan with you.

If your credit is good it shouldn't be a problem . Sorry for your friend

edit sorry I saw it's your first dog. But have you asked your vet for a payment plan?
View Quote

Unless his normal vet is a board certified orthopedic surgeon he is not doing TTAs. Vets are not obligated to offer payment plans. Most vets offer Care Credit or Scratch Pay to help people out. If you can’t get approved for that the chances you will repay the vet are slim. We only offer payment plans to a select few; and yes we get screwed for this all the time.

OP here’s to hoping Casper does well.
