I've bought 1/2" and 3/4", but we are going to need something like 18" if possible.  That or we need to find a clear bucket, or something similar.

Yeah, and we will probably need a couple feet.  I'll bet someone makes a bucket that might work.

I got to thinking while I was running my dog......why does it have to be perfectly round..????....Some Lexan in a thicker variety could be melted into a rough, bulbous colum, and encase the fiber optics and cotton that way.   I just don't want it to break if it gets bumped into or kicked.

We can attach what ever we use to plywood base and anchors around the pole like we did last year.  Should be able to have plenty of places to attach and secure.

What about making the column the launch tower and putting the rocket up on the wall already in flight with a vapor trail leading back to the column?

Oh.....   I may have to visit both local dealers and see of they can persuade us to feature their brand.

Of course, one of my students's dad is the Case dealer, so maybe we should go that route.

Another option perhaps would be little bollards around it to prevent it from being bumped/vandalized without the outer protective shell at all?  This would also leave a decent size "void" to stash the electronics, power supply fiber core and driver, etc.  Fit things in without a shoehorn.

I believe we need a new sketch, the room is far too small for my current ideas.  They're essentially your current ideas, but expanded.   What is your estimated count of independent robot (microcontroller) devices?   The rocket could just be flashing lights and easy.  If you needed to control motors, that gets spendy fast.   RasPi would allow a phone sized color display show whatever animation you'd like for under $20 I believe (Plus the Rpi itself).  You already know how LEDs work and have an idea of the cos of motor drivers and decent motors + mounting hardware.

Is the plan similar to the Helo?  Immersive, where looking into it one way is mars, and looking back out is Wyoming?

--ETA:  Ever goof around with Google SketchUp or Autodesk Fusion 360 (harder) to lay it out for a virtual walk-through prior to building the items themselves to get dimensions proper?

I think we are on the same page with the "floating on flames rocket".   I like that description.  Encasing the flames at the base is going to be necessary, and I think the lexan in several organic molded pieces should do that.

The room may be small, but that may be a plus.  I like the way it lent itself to the locomotive display, and I had similar concerns, then.

Yes, I'd like to see the Wyoiming to Mars transition be fluid.  I'm not sure I'm set on one view WY, the other Mars.  I'm kind of open on that.

I'm going to go in this morning and write on the board the ideas expressed in this thread.  From there we can pick and bounce off of them to see what would be best.  Robotics and their talent will be the determining factor for how many moving pieces we have.

As to a new sketch, I'll try to draw over one of the photos with MS paint.

I dont think we have photoshop on our desktops.  We are supposed to have SketchbookX on there, but I'll have to check.  Dont hold your breath....

I'll use this as an excuse, but leaving some ambiguity to the idea, can sometimes get more original ideas from the students, and ARFCOM, as no one will feel locked into just my vision.  That goes for me too.

Ag dept. Wanted something more Ag related and agreed to pull down all their trophies and banners to do it.  Same with Robotics.

And, I'm not sure I could get enthusiasm for another train.  I get the same reaction talking about an F22, or The Red Baron's plane to go with our Sopwith Camel.

What ever tractor we do, we need to have something about 7 1/2 ft long x 4 1/2 ft wide in size.   Not sure what scale that will end up to be, but that would fit the space best.

Our Falcon Heavy should be somewhere about 14' tall with about 2-3 feet of flame under it.
