Uhm, what operating system are you running?
(As if I didn't know). JPEGs can be opened in Internet Explorer, MS Paint, and, get this! with the Picture and Fax Viewer. |

2000 Pro. I thought paint is what I always used but it says "this is not a valid bitmap file".

If you’re using Internet Explorer, just click “File” (located in the upper left hand corner of the window), then “open”, then browse to find and click on the file.
When you start browsing, you’ll probably need to change the file type at the bottom of the box to “JPG”. Granted you can’t do much with the image in Explorer, but at least you can see it. |

I personally like ACDSee 32 from ACD Systems. It is a combination picture viewer and browser. I have v.2.41. Current version is 6.0.2

The one cyanide gives leads to
[url]http://www.irfanview.com/[/url] and it is excellent, used by a number of my friends. ACDSee and Irfanview will both convert picture formats, that is, you can open a *.bmp or *.tif, and then "save as" a *.jpg or *.gif or whatever. Both of these programs open nearly every picture format, and do it very quickly. Irfanview's viewer is freeware. |

Ifranview kicks ass for viewing pictures.
Can scroll thru a folder full of pictures using the mouse's scroll wheel for um nm. |

For ease of use and features infran view is hard to beat, I know no one will ever beat it's price - free.
The only image program better with more is Adobe Photoshop 7 att 600 700 dollars. For most paint works ok. IE you lost me ? |

Acdsee, fast image viewer without all the bells and whistles. It's been my default viewer for about 8 years. Acdsee classic is the best version I think. middle mouse wheel pic scrolling is the best feature imo. check it out.

Another vote for ACDSee. It's been my default picture program since I've started playing with computers. To quote the old cigarette ad "I'd rather fight than switch..".

Just download an older copy of LView Pro. It'll let you view about anything and you can use it to run a scanner, set exposure, crop, etc. I've used 1.D2 for years.

The Browser feature in ACDSee is cool. You can chose to show thumbnails. This is great for guys like me with lots of folders of pix, and you are having trouble finding a particular one. If you chose the thumbnail view, you can simply single click on the thumbnail, and a larger version will appear on the lower left of the screen. If that is the photo you want, you can double click either on the thumbnail, or the larger one, and it will then go to the Veiwer mode, with the pic full screen. You can rotate jpgs, slideshow, change picture formats, etc.
This is my default picture viewer, and has been since the old Windows 3.1 and 486 days. It is very fast opening pictures. |
