I thought m855 would be adequate since it will punch through both sides of a USGI steel helmet, but I'm not sure it'd have enough energy beyond 100m to ensure a quick kill. And at that range, you come into range of Orc arrows, which I think would penetrate through the kevlar without too much trouble (assuming a hit away from the ceramic plates).

i'm thinking something of the 308 variety. ar10 with 147 ball should do well. TXL

Make that a +4 Vorpal .308. Unless the armor is cursed and can redirect the damage onto the attacker. Then you gotta watch your ass.
Link Posted: 12/14/2003 7:24:34 PM EDT
Orcs are humanoids and more than that are close enough to humans that we can breed. Thus whatever would work on a human in armor would work on an orc. The real question should be what would work on a Minotaur or a Umber Hulk.

Why do you need a quick kill? I like to watch them writhe on the ground. Black Tip 30-06 in my Garand should take one at a distance and go through a few up close.

Definitely some .308 Trophy Bonded Bear Claw. Ya gotta have something that will reliably penetrate that steel armor.

I believe orcs are lawful evil. A Paladin with a Holy Avenger is best against chaotic evil creatures. Not that I would know anything about that kind of stuff. FAL .308 holes make empty Orc souls!
Link Posted: 12/15/2003 7:37:52 AM EDT
I'd have to go with the +5 vorpal (or holy) .308 cartridge for orcs out in the open. Chances are, however, that you're going to find orcs below ground and usually at ranges of 100 yards or less. The same goes for Minotaurs or a Umber Hulks. In such a case, forget about flat tragectory or humane kills, you just better drop the minotaurs and umber hulks before they get in melee range with you. At melee range, you better be wearing +5 adamantine full plate armor, or you're jelly. For such encounters, I'd strongly recommend at least a 45/70 govt., .450 Marlin, or .44 magnum out of a lever action rifle. These should be able to blast through orc armor, umber hulk carapace, or any other armor these baddies might have. It's all about brutal knock-down power. At melee range, I'd switch to semi-auto pistols in 10mm.

[ROFL2] This is so damn nerdy.... 3 rifles I'd like for armored orc killing: FAL(.308), AK-47(7.62X39), and an AR-15(458 SOCOM)

I'd use some of that new Raufoss 556 theyve been doing trials with. Seems extremely promising for "anti materiel" use.

For Orcs, ss109, M855 or even M193 would be fine. However, for the larger, stronger, and more heavily armored Uruk-hai, I am thinking .308.

ah, someone finnaly said it. A quad set of 50 cal anti-aircraft guns on a motorized turret. One of those on the inner wall of the main tower of helms deep would have held the entire orc army at bay from breaching the main gate. Another one on the far side of the outer wall with some plating to keep arrows off the shooter would have easaly sucured the wall. as for personell. mini-gun, with back pack ammo. ol' painless

I'm not sure it matters much. Orcs have an armor class of 6(pre 3rd edition) and 1 hit dice. However, a healthy dose of +3 Ballistic Tips of Slaying should be more than sufficient. Just be sure you have enough ammo on hand, as the appearance rate of orcs is 30-300

If only the Rohiram and Elves at Helms Deep had the presence of mind to toss away thier bows, and grab 50. Barrets instead. Furthest the Uruk-hai would have gotten would be the second wall. Those ladders, the ramp, and the steps had them a little too crowded together.

WWoodworth, I thought Orcs were Chotic evil, that's why a Lawful good Paladin would always kill one when ever I tried to run one thru a dungeon. I just gave up and went with a Chotic netural Halfling(Hobbit)so I wouldn't get killed so much. Of course he was a thief but that came in handy for picking locks and sneeking around. http://www.geocities.com/vacred_dotal/chaoevil.htm

On second thought(and after reading more)maybe Orcs are Lawful evil. They do tend to "pack" together and follow the group. I tend to be the following: Chaotic Neutral Chaotic neutral charaters believe that there is no order to anything, including their own actions. With this as a guiding principle, they tend to follow whatever whim strikes them at the moment. Good and evil are irrelevant when making a decision. Chaotic neutral characters are extremely difficult to deal with. Such characters have been known to cheerfully and for no apparant purpose gamble everything they have on the roll of a single die. They are almost totally unreliable. In fact, the only reliable thing about them is that they cannot be relied upon! This alignment is perhaps the most difficult to play. Lunatics and madmen tend toward chaotic neutral behavior. Taken from TSR's The Player's Handbook. 1. May keep his word. 2. Lies and cheats if he feels it necessary. 3. Never kills an unarmed foe, but may knock out or beat up one. 4. Never kills an innocent but may harm or kidnap. 5. Will use torture to extract information but not for pleasure. 6. Seldom kills for pleasure. 7. Is not likely to help someone without an alterior motive. (Even if its just showing off!). 8. Has little respect for authority. 9. Does not work well within groups - tends to do as he pleases, despite orders to the contrary. 10. Will usually take dirty money or items. 11. Is very unlikely to betray a friend. http://www.geocities.com/vacred_dotal/align.htm#index Check the above link and see what you are. Sorry to hijack the thread but you know us CN types,LOL.

Napalm sticks to Orcs! (Doesn't quite have the same ring to it, does it?) Out in the open in a defensive role I'd go for something beltfed & possibly watercooled (Maxim, Vickers, 1917 Browning )because Orcs tend to travel in large #. .308, 8x57, .303, 7.62x54R or .30-06, it doesn't matter..all are good. A Mk19 40mm would really help also, same for Ma Deuce (nothing says FU like .50BMG) & plenty of Claymores. Something like the Lahti 20mm antitank rifle or the 25mm Bushmaster chaingun would take care of any hill giants or war elephants the Orc horde brings with them Something in .308 like a M14, AR10, HK91, FN-FAL (or even a Dragunov in 7.62x54R) would help keep them at a distance above ground. Even a Mauser/Enfield/Mosin bolt action or a M1 Garand would suffice for distance work & would be much better for any potential hand to hand with bayonets than a more modern pistol gripped semi. For close in below ground fighting a M4 or AK would suffice. If you had to use a subgun something in 7.62x25 Tokarev (PPSh41, PPS43 or CZ24/Cz26)would give you the adequate penetration to defeat armor. I'd also want to have a mussette bag or 2 full of grenades (frag, CS, WP...) & at least 1 guy with a zippo (portable fireball)to deal with any other creepy, crawly nasty thing that shares the Orcs underground lair....green slime, trolls, undead, etc. Flamethrower is almost always the ticket when dealing with weird shit...when in doubt, torch it! [pyro] Another Chaotic Neutral/Chaotic Good member here.

One Istari (Wizard), properly pissed off and unfettered from the rules of the Embassy of Istari could lay waste to an Army of Orcs. Unfortunately the rules that Gandalf, Saruman, Radagast and the rest accepted when they took on the job was that they couldn't use their full power and had to work primarily to influence events rather than make things happen directly. The last time Maia and Valar took an active hand in the wars against Morgoth and Sauron, they broke Middle Earth and sunk half the continent beneath the ocean. As one of Manwe's (the King of the Valar) chief servants and bearer of the Elven Ring Narya (the ring of fire) Gandalf likely could have chosen to incinerate the entire orc host had he wanted and been allowed, but that was not his role. A stand up fight between Gandalf the White without any limitations on him and Sauron would have left little of Middle Earth to rule and Sauron likely the victor since so much of Sauron's power was not actually contained in his current physical embodiment, but in the Ring. A fully empowered Istari Wizard is nothing more and nothing less than Divine intervention. Orc armor is generally of poor quality. While the orcs were bred and manipulated from captive elves, the process ripped all the grace out of them leaving nothing but a bestial mess behind. The Orcs are not up to fine work so their weapons and armor are low quality stuff, essentially mass produced wrought iron rather than true steel. Orcs also do not fight with organization or any real technique, so a well trained human or elven fighter is proof against many Orcs. The advantage that orcs have is numbers since they breed some twisted form of rabbit. Anything that will take out a human will take out an Orc, even an Uruk. The problem comes in when some of the Uruks are berserk. 5.56 will do it, but .30 cal will do it more reliably and faster.
