It's a shame that a team that can't even win it's own conference gets to play for a national title. [s]BCS[/s] BS computers are done for now.

LSU! LSU! LSU! It really should be LSU vs USC.

Do we deserve to go to the Sugar bowl? Our record is no worse than anyone else that would be in the Sugar Bowl. If we lost to KState in September or October we would still be in the hunt. I agree until everyone plays a conference championship game, things are not equal. Do I like it that we may have a shot at the Sugar even though we lost??? No! But until the playground is level, this is what we have. Does any other team have a record better than 12-1? I don't think so. So, why would we not be considered for the Sugar Bowl. Unfortunately, I think the rest of the country loves to hate OU. I think they want to see a USC vs LSU matchup. I think we will end up #1 in the BCS and not be go to New Orleans. It's sad, but it's the facts. We still have a very good team and I think we are capable of beating USC and LSU on any given day. I think we are capable of beating KState, but last night we weren't. Give them credit, they were prepared and they didn't just beat us, they handed our **s to us and laughed about it. They deserve the credit for that. The team stats were interesting, but the score wasn't. There was no question of who was in charge of that game.

It's already official. LSU vs OU in the Sugar Bowl.
Link Posted: 12/7/2003 2:21:21 PM EDT
Total BULLSHIT! Will somebody explain to me how a team that can't even win it's own conference gets to play for the national championship...PLEASE? Not only did OU lose, they got whomped! I mean STEAMROLLED! K-State kicked their Sooner asses all the way back to fucking Norman. This I do NOT understand...not at all. This computerized system has been fucked up from the start. It has almost been tanked last year...and this year finally has. Folks the emperor has no fucking clothes...the system is broke. With ALL due respect to a great team and a great program, due to the results of yesterdays games OU does NOT deserve to be in the Sugar Bowl. USC and LSU both do. This is a totally fucked up situation. Now, everybody and their brother (Like me?) are going to be quacking all the rest of the year until that fucked up Sugar Bowl is finally history. This is a tainted and phyrric victory for OU and I can tell you...the players know it. Mind you...they're happy to be going...but they KNOW who really deserves to be there. I've been for a playoff system for the pro football minors for years. It's time we fessed up to the fact that this current system of "picking" a champ is totally inept. These results prove that beyond a shadow of a doubt. OU FANS MAY NOW FLAME AWAY! [;D] [pissed]
Link Posted: 12/7/2003 2:22:36 PM EDT
The team in the beginning of the year that loses a tough game by a blowout is not the same as the #1 team losing a championship game in the last week of the season before the bowl games. Obviously the OU that stomped the other 12 teams is not the same OU that lost 35-7 to KState..... Further, the BCS and other poll systems were supposed to prevent this shit -- it didn't. You will NOT have the #1 team in the Sugar Bowl. Whether or not OU is #2 or #3 you will not have the #1 team in the championship. It's fucked up and it's a farce. Anybody who puts one college season of their favorite team over the good of the system is warped in the priority system and I wish numerous similar "fuckings" at the hand of a BCS system to their favorite team in the future. #1 USC belongs in the game....whoever else is there is inconsequential at this point.
Link Posted: 12/7/2003 2:27:46 PM EDT
USC should not be ranked #1. LSU should be. LSU has 12 wins, USC only has 11. And LSU plays much tougher teams. Wow, big fucking deal, USC ran over some damn beavers. They still let them score 28 points. LSU just stomped the #5 team. You can't mess with LSU's number one defense.

The only way for this thing to remotely NOT end in controversy is for us to handle LSU (hmmmm???) and Michigan beat USC. I am now the biggest Michigan fan in America.

Actually, it's your TEAM, not YOU who's going to the Sugar Bowl. However, why did K State get booted from National Title consideration when they blew the Big Twelve title game in 1998? A bunch of BULLSHIT politicking, that's why.

Obviously an LSU fan talking.......I am not an LSU, USC or OU fan....not really a fan of college football for the simple reason that the best team may or may not play for the title. I don't give a shit who ends up on the BCS #1 or the Coaches' poll #1 or the AP #1, I simply know that OU likely will not be #1 on any of the polls and USC likely will be #1 on 2 or more -- including the two that carry the most weight.

First, if I personally were King, I would simply match the two top-rated teams in the AP and ESPN/USA Today polls, provided the polls agree. The computers and other elements of the current formula would only be used if these polls disagree. But I am not King. Second, if I were King, there would be more than two teams selected for the “playoffs,” preferably eight. But I am not King. What we have now is the application of an objective BCS formula that applies equally to the University of Oklahoma and to all other 116 Div. 1-A teams. The BCS formula, in the current configuration, has been in place for the last two years. All 117 teams knew at the beginning of the season exactly how the 2 teams were to be selected for the national championship game. No one has changed anything for the last two years. The BCS formula is being applied equally to O.U. and to all other 116 Div. 1-A teams, including USC and LSU. Changes in the formula, or more drastic changes, are subjects for next year, not this year. The rules can’t be changed in the middle of the game, whether it’s checkers or college football. The BCS formula contains five objective elements which most people agree in the abstract are valid: (1) the coaches/writers’ polls average, (2) the computer strength average, (3) strength of schedule, (4) number of losses, and (5) “quality” wins. Most of the “problems” people perceive are based on the difference between their subjective opinions and the BCS formula’s objective criteria. None of the elements are immune to criticism. First, the coaches/ writers’ polls use the “bubble-up” approach, which unfairly rewards a team that loses a game earlier rather than later in a season. Second, the computer strength formulas are mostly secret and therefore not really understood. Most appear not to consider when in the season a loss occurred and they cannot consider margin of victory. Since both of these items are part of our subjective views, the computer strength formulas appear unfair. Third, strength of schedule seems arbitrary and unfair when applied, as games by a team’s opponents and opponents’ opponents seem too remote. Fourth, number of losses is important but obviously weighted to the caliber of teams one plays week-in and week-out. It is unfair to look at losses alone, without considering this. Fifth, the quality-win factor addresses specifically the head-to-head “injustice” of Miami-Florida State of 2000. Yet it also is unfair, as it takes one game out of a team’s season-long performance and unduly emphasize it. In sum, any team that does not like the application of the BCS formula, can take steps to change its schedule or its performance. But again, regardless of whether the BCS formula elements are fair or unfair, all five BCS formula elements are being applied objectively and equally to O.U. and to all other 116 Div. 1-A teams, including USC and LSU. Let the chips fall where they may. No system is perfect. A playoff would be “unfair” to the first team excluded, regardless of whether it’s the team that is rated number 3, 5, 9, 17 or even 65. It just depends on one’s perspective

Perhaps your tuition money should go to passing an English class instead of attending games. And no, I'm not the only one who has a problem with leeches hitching their wagon to someone else's star. As soon as you suit up and take the field, then you can honestly consider yourself a part of their team. Until then, you're just some loser fan.

True. But we can make it more perfect, like not allowing a team that doesn't win their conference to play for the national title. Not to mention that LSU playing Georgia twice hurts their quality win points eventhough Georgia was ranked in the top 5 for both games!

Why is everyone so hot for a playoff system? Half the fun is arguing the whole off-season about who really is No. 1. The old bowl system fits that perfectly and gets rivalries involved. Playoffs are what makes MLB so boring now, not to mention the second seasons of the NBA and the NHL. I say let the New Year be the Bowlfest day and let "we the people" figure it out in the off-season. CW

Division I college football is about the only sporting activity that comes to mind that doesn't have a playoff system in place to determine a champion. Division IA and down seem to manage just fine with playoffs in football. Also, look at the excitement that March Madness and the Stanley Cup playoffs generate. A playoff system is needed badly, look at the Cinderella stories like Villanova and NC State in basketball that would never had a chance to play for a NC without a playoff system in place.

How much basketball and hockey do you watch with enthrallment during the regular season? If just about anyone can make it to the playoffs, what is the point of winning conferences and/or division titles? Perfect case in point is the SF Giants. Best team in MLB (I'm a Dodger fan BTW) and they are out in the beginning. Winning the division didn't mean squat. As for Cinderella's making it the finals, what business do they have be in the competition in the first place? If they couldn't cut it during the regular season, why the special dispensation? CW

USC's only lose was a tough very close game on the road. LSU and Oklahoma lost games at home. That should account for something also. LSU only scored 7 points at home and lost. USC lost 34-31 on the road in the 4th week and has blown out every opponent since then scoring over 40 points all but one week when they scored 37. LSU's tougher schedule wasn't official until Boise State beat Hawaii. Had Hawaii won, USC would have had the tougher schedule. Does that suck for USC or what? What we might end up with now is a split national #1 because of split #1's in the coachs and BCS poles. So in the end nothing still gets resolved.
Link Posted: 12/7/2003 4:48:24 PM EDT
If OU wins and USC wins then there will be a split champion. They are already reporting this all over ESPN, on every single ESPNews report, Sportscenter, etc.... This is EXACTLY what the BCS was supposed to eliminate.. Back in the day you could have an AP champ and a Coaches' champ..... BCS was supposed to eliminate them, but when one of the main criteria of the 5 BCS directives is the coaches poll and the coaches say USC is #1, how does OU losing the Championship game make them BCS #1??? I think the true test will be against LSU. I have believed that OU has been overrated all year. If teh sooners stop LSU, then I'll believe they are for real, until then... I was loving it the other night. I saw MAnning get closer and closer to a HEsiman with every play Saturday night.

I still believe if OU and USC both win, USC will be the NC. USC is number one now in both polls and I don't think anything other than a USC loss will change things. I've no dog in this fight. As an Alabama fan. I've got my own probs !! (And next year too.) About the only satisfaction I had last night was that K State used the game plan Alabama used against OU. K State had the personnel and executed that Alabama game plan to perfection. 5sub

USC is already showing as NC on the AP & Coaches' Polls. So if they both win they will remain split, as OU will STILL retain the BCS title #..... Check the standings I posted above and the number of votes for #1 in the AP & Coaches' polls.....

You all have it wrong. LSU will crush OU and become the national champions.
Link Posted: 12/7/2003 7:51:08 PM EDT
The major polls have USC #1, they also have 2 votes for every 1 that LSU has in #1 votes. Oklahoma isn't close in that respect. If they played well and lost a close game to Kansas State I could see it but they got killed. Getting beat like that proves your not the #1 team going into the championship game. In the past teams losing at the end of the year got hurt in the polls more than losing at the begining of the year and thats the way it should be. Are you playing better at bowl time if you lose the first game and win the rest or if you win them all and lose the last game. Come on Oklahoma fans, they got crushed. The #1 team in the country (if they are really the #1 team in the country) shouldn't get beat like that by anyone.

What game did OU lose at home??????????????

Sorry bad annalogy but we are talking the thriller at manila! KC put the rock right up against OU 's head! Fluke? They were two of the same type teams(very big line) fast linebackers and one very (quinten grifin type back) and they wanted it more! Even if we had taken advantage of every scoreing opportunity it still would have been a 57 to 48 game we loose! Somebody ounce said on any given sunday any one team could beat another! The game you will get to see will be a real class game LSU and OU! And like I said Putnam City Piraits could probably beat USC! Bob [:D]

Another fucking "we" person. Please enlighten everyone here as to what position you play or what your job on the coaching staff is.

Actually, it's your TEAM, not YOU who's going to the Sugar Bowl. However, why did K State get booted from National Title consideration when they blew the Big Twelve title game in 1998? A bunch of BULLSHIT politicking, that's why.

I think you are the only guy on here that has a problem with using we. My tuition pays Stoops salary so ya "we". Did you cut and paste that from your last post?

No, he's not the only person that has a problem with it. If you don't suit and play, it is not "we". Your tuition does not pay Stoops salary, that comes from the athletic dept funds, which come from boosters.

Holy shit, you're a Tide fan too. I was born and raised in Birmingham as a Tide fan. I just hope they give Shula a chance, I think he could be as great as the Bear. We both like and have preban 180s, like the AR10, and now I find out you are a Tide fan. Damn!!!! We just disagree, adamantly I might add, on Israel.[:D] Back on the topic at hand, I think USC (South Carolina is the real USC, to contradict Keyshawn, since they existed long before the University of Southern California) suffered from the weakness of their schedule. ESPN showed some of the teams they beat and it seems that over half of them have losing records. Given that, I think it should still be USC and LSU in the Sugar Bowl. It won't matter anyway, for LSU will beat OU and Michigan will beat USC, so LSU will be National Champs. I have no bias, as I am not a fan of any of the schools involved, I just think this is what is going to happen.

LARRYG you really think LSU can beat OU? I mean the real OU? And why? Bob [:D]

Just think LSU is better. They had an easier time against Bama, the only common opponent that I know of. What makes you think they can't? K State proved they are very beatable. We shall see.
