Thanks. What about if I removed the FH from the rifle and sent just the rifle (sans FH) to CA? Would that be legal?

Yes, but no magazines!
You can have all the 20, 30, or even 40 round magazines that you want. They are not banned from ownership or even use. They however, can not be brought into the state. Last time I checked there isn't a border check point checking cars for magazines (only illegal aliens). [;)] |

If you installed a SA PRK-legal brake (which removes the FS and bayo lug), the rifle would be legal. However, the rifle would also lose its pre-ban status forever (or until 9/13/04, when it will no longer matter).
