Five treated in New York subway after odour Wed 26 November, 2003 16:58 NEW YORK (Reuters) - At least five subway workers have been being treated for exposure to an "unknown substance" in the New York subway system, the day before the U.S. Thanksgiving Holiday, according to a fire department spokesman. Firefighters and other emergency services personnel were checking the southbound "F" line on Wednesday from the Chelsea neighbourhood of Manhattan to Chinatown for the cause of an odour in a tunnel, spokesman Paul Iannizzotto said. New York has been on the highest possible security alert since the September 11, 2001, hijacked plane attacks and there have been a rash of attacks on U.S. operations in Iraq and other Western interests in the past month attributed to the al Qaeda global network. "Five civilian workers were transported for an unknown odour in one of the tunnels," the fire department spokesman said. Police confirmed that the workers were taken to the hospital, but no further details were immediately available. Last Friday, the U.S. government has issued an advisory warning of al Qaeda's "continued desire" to plot an attack on American interests abroad, but there was no change in the U.S. threat level. Did they ever solve the case several years ago where emergency room workers had to be treated for the chemical cloud eminating from the corpse of the woman? I don't think they ever figured out what that was about.

I wonder if it was something like what happened in Philidelphia this past summer. High School kids broke into the subway there through maintanance access tunnels and hung open plastic jugs of chlorine bleach and liquid ammonia on ledges in the tunnel with trip lines running across the track.
