"Cheaper than ground launch" is yet to be proven... Pegasus is the most expensive launcher on Earth in terms of $/kg.

Planes also limit the size of the rocket, that giant monster plane Paul Allen built will lift less than half of what a Falcon 9 will do with land recovery of the booster.

Cost is not the same as price.

SpaceX had not sent anything into orbit when this project was put in motion, and they are clearly aiming at different markets.

Yet the fact that this project still hasn't sent anything to orbit while SpaceX went on to launching 1/4 of the worlds payloads over the same time period should say something about the concept/project.

They wont be aiming at different markets if SpaceX hits it's cost targets with BFR though... ~$10 million for 100+ tonnes to orbit.

Fairly expensive.

Cheapest ride to space right now in terms of $/kg is the SpaceX Falcon Heavy. They're aiming for about $100/kg for the fully reusable BFR.

Generally speaking though, it costs more to put smaller satellites in orbit than larger ones in terms of $/kg. It's closest competitor, Electron, is about $30,000/kg.

The Virgin/Orbit business is actually being funded by Abu Dhabi, which explains how they have so much money and are moving so fast.

Well, they did lose 3 people in a horrible nitrous explosion, and then a co-pilot. Caution comes at a price.

Jimmy Carter had the same idea.  When you think about it, it would put a bullseye on every commercial airliner.

Thats Virgin Galactic, which has been dragging their feet.

Virgin Orbit started operations in 2017, thats pretty dang fast.

2017 is when they changed names. They started on the rocket somewhere around 2007. And they still haven't launched anything.

It's a good thing they picked a company that is MSM friendly, or else we wouldn't know they took a ride down the taxi way, a major accomplishment that's never been done before except when it was done before in the fucking 50's and 60's.

I can't believe people are excited about this, we once had an aircraft known as the X15 and X15B, the world's first operational space plane, and it was also launched by aircraft, B52. People excited about stuff NASA had figured out in the 60's

I was hoping when I saw the picture that they were going to try to put the 747 in orbit with the rocket booster - that would be much more interesting.

There was actually a B made for TV movie that had that premise.  ‘The Plane That Couldn't Land’, or something like that, starting Hal Lynden.

Heck, we should require every US commercial airliner to have a cruise missile pylon so it can be used for military purposes if necessary!

Wouldn't it be more cost-effective to mount one under EACH wing, and then just wait until you had two payloads that could both go up on the same flight?
View Quote
As AR18 alludes to, the 747 can have a fifth mount point on one wing, which is (ahem) more commonly used to transport a replacement engine.  I'm not sure if all 747s have this or if it's a "factory option" like getting the Eddie Bauer trim package.
