 Good one merrel.

This is Ms Freefall. Just wanted to let you know he is doing good. He's having some pain in the right eye since his contact came out, but overall he's doing really good. He just can't look at the computer, it makes his eyes hurt. So I'm keeping him in the bed. Thanks for the well wishes.

Can he see this?

Heh. Sorry. Best wishes for a speedy and complete recovery. A good pal of mine had it done about 18 months ago, and for sure, the first 3-4 days were the toughest on him. He was very sensitive to light, but within about 10 days he was pretty much back to normal.

You came all the way out to the Peoples Republik for laser surgery? Dude, our laws restrict laser output to 3 nano-watts unless you can find a doctor with a registered pre-ban laser, and then they are still restricted to ten pulses per minute. Also, only the pre-bans can have pistol grips, and you know how shaky the pencil grip is.

Good luck on your recovery, it will all be worth it.

Two more weeks of glasses for me!

Had it done, my sight was worse. Hurt like hell, was worth every minute of the pain. Visual acuity is better than before with contacts. Good luck mate, you'll not regret it.

So you know, took a number of weeks until my vision reached its peak.

It will take several weeks for the lines to heal over, but after that-- much better vision than just after the surgery.

I had Laser PRK too-- good choice.

I have a hair better than 20/15 with contacts.  I am considering laser or ENTACs when I get older and my eyes settle down.

Kinda amazing what a person can see with good vision.  With a 4 power scope, I can see subsonic 22 bullets from 15 yards all the way past 80 yards when I shoot.  If someone had told me that they could see that a few years ago when I wore glasses (a little better than 20/20), I would have thought that they were BSing me.

I got LASIK done.. My old vision was 20/900 and now I have 20/15 in both eyes.. Day after the surgery I drove to the eye doctor for the day after appointment.  5 minutes after my surgery I could read the time on the wallclock from 25 feet away.  I LOVE IT.. best damn 3900 dollars I ever spent.

I really really want to get this done at some point. Seeing my alarm clock in the morning would be the best part.

You guys talking about how you had it done, what about your shooting afterward? Irons, scopes, and red dots?

I would have it done also but I'm 20/15 collectively but my left eye is a bit weaker at 20/20.  Eye guy says I have superb vision

Seriously I am trying ti get my wife to lok into this so keep us posted!

Good luck!

I've been thinking about getting this done as well. I can get it done for free at the Air Force Academy. All it would cost me is travel from Utah and back and a room at billeting.

There are differences with Laser PRK. Look into Laser PRK too...

Do any of the procedures not involve cutting of the eye surface?  I don't think I could allow anyone to touch my eye.

Thanks

Now a days, all of the Lasik surgeries involve cutting the eye cover and flipping it back. Then they do a "Death Star" on your retina and flip back the eye cover and let it heal. My surgery took a whooping 15 minutes. My Custom Lasik was $4200 and was the best $4200 I ever spent. I had it done 3 months ago and wish I had it done years ago.

All I have to say is find a good doctor who does a ton of them and has a proven track record. I went to a place that did about 6 a day and had all of the latest equipment and training.

How old would you have to be before the surgery would be worthwhile?

18? 20's?

21 minumum I think.  I would have gotten PRK as there is no flap but with vision as bad as mine it wouldn't have worked very well.  PRK is for people with not THAT bad of vision.  LASIK is for people like me that had 20/900 and were legally blind without glasses or contacts.

As long as you have it done before you're in, you're home free.

Did I just read that correctly? LASIK is for those with REALLY bad vision?

Hmmm my recruiter said that getting it done before you go in is a hassle because all of the paperwork/waivers that need to be finished.

He said once you're in it's nothing to get it done, just like a normal check-up.

I also plan to have this done later on.

I had LASIK done nearly three years ago.
I was something like 20/500, but I just took my first driver's license renewal vision test since the surgery.

I read EVERY LINE perfectly.  My eyes are still 20/15 and I'm now 38 years old.

I do notice that I have trouble changing from close in reading to long distance focusing, especially in dim lighting.  But it was worth it, considering my previous condition.  Ironically, a buddy called my vision center to check about pricing, and it's nearly $1000 MORE than it was three years ago (WTF?).

I had LASIK done a year ago this December. It takes about a year for your eyes to fully heal.
My doc gave me a list of do's & dont's after surgery (No .50 cal shooting for 6 months due to the potential pressure on the eyeballs)
The only lingering effects I experience is dry eye, this is getting better with time. When the cornea is cut, the nerves in the corneal tissue that activate the tear ducts are severed and it just takes time for the nerves to heal. All in all, I would not hesitate to recommend the procedure.

The military is a little less willing to do LASIK, they will do PRK on about anyone, but there is a pretty good wait depending on your MOS/Billet.  They are still considering to start doing LASIK, but are concerned that the flap never completely heals and may prove open in the future, this is a very remote chance but a chance none the less.

Th big problem with PRK is the amount of time it takes to fully heal, it took me 6 weeks till I could see very well.  There was a second procedure for those with really bad vision got when I was getting my PRK done, LASEK.  It is exactly like PRK, but they made a cover out of your top layer the skin on your eye that they moved back over after the lasing.  But unlike LASIK, that flap eventually sluffs off.

No cutting?  Not a problem.  No touching?  Fat chance.  In PRK, the epithelium is scraped off, the treatment is performed, and a bandage contact lens is placed on the cornea for about three days while it re-epithelializes (and hurts like a bitch ).  LASIK makes use of a tool called a microkeratome that creates a very thin, hinged flap of corneal tissue that is folded back down after the laser treatment is performed.  It's virtually painless.  Some people don't have a choice because their orbits are too recessed to reach the cornea with the microkeratome, so LASIK is out.  The flap adheres pretty well and the chances of displacing it are extremely small.  It's a personal choice.  Your doctor would probably give you Valium or something similar, so you'd be half out-of-it anyways.

Free,
Keep us updated on your progress.

I am planning on having LASIK in January and have been looking into it for years.
My dad had PRK surgery done about 15 yrs. ago and my Dr. said I should wait.

I am 37 now and my wife has a Medical Spending Acct. through work so I will be able to have it done and the money will be reimbursed pre-tax.

It will be $3000.00 for both eyes.

Does your local Dr. have a video that shows the procedure being done?

Mine does and they also have a "Live LASIK procedure" seminar twice a year to let people watch someone have the procedure done!

They also put every eligible persons name in a bucket and draw out a name and that person wins a LASIK procedure!

I didn't win the procedure and it was very informative to see and hear the Dr. and patient (or impatient as she was!) during the procedure!

Sigifrith/Mike,
Yes it does involve cutting and having both eyelids held down.
If you are claustrophobic or do not like being "held down" then you probably will not be able to have it done!
I don't think my wife would be able to have it done!

I had LASIK surgery done on Friday Nov 7th - a little over a week ago.  I went from 20/400 to 20/20 literally overnight.  I have worn glasses since I was age 8 or so, so this is a HUGE change.

So far I can say that the procedure is as promised - but talk to me in 20 years when the long-term effects become clear.

Having said that, I would recommend the surgery.  Just make sure that you have a good physician and that you don't go for the "2 for $399" deal.

I had PRK done 2 years ago.  I was almost at the max for PRK, which is not that much.  Pain for 2 days until the cell layer grew back over my eyes.  BUT, over the next 2 months I went to 20/15 and have stabalized right around there.  I can easily read the 20/15 line....
Fantastic!!

Had mine done (LASIK) coming on two years now.  Was driving the next day and on my motorcycle within two weeks.  Best $1800 I ever spent.  Went from 20/200 to 20/20.  It's great to be able to see the little VCR clock at anytime during the night without fumbling for glasses.  For those who say they're thinking about it, stop thinking and just do it.  First thing I did was buy a nice pair of Nike sunglasses with interchangeable lenses (eyewear is required in FL on motorcycles).
