Around SW OH, a welfare burger is kind of like meatloaf patties; ground beef with lots of filler added to stretch it out. Onion, peppers, seasonings, bread crumbs. I've seen them with olives, pickles and cheese mixed in.

Not bad actually.

Scioto County reporting in. For us it was onions, breadcrumbs, and beef, and it wasn't Welfare it was a Hoover Burger. However, I had depression era family members. As a child of the '70s I was the baby.

Bologna. I know that sounds weird but we are the kings and it isn't Oscar Meyer like you had in your lunch box at school. It is all about the meat.  There should be lots of it.  And it is simple to make.

I don't need the bacon/bun/salad when I eat this bologna

Good looking burgers, OP.

Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives did a special on the best burgers in America. Every one had grilled or sauteed onions on it. That was the only commonality with toppings.

Squeeze In is pretty good. We have one right downtown, but if you're coming town, here, you want to get a bison burger at Bar of America. Or you can skip the fancy shit and go to Burger Me.

OP's burgers look good. Next time I visit my sis in WA, maybe I'll road trip over.

That's not how you win friends and influence enemies, especially in a limited market like Camano Is., IMO.

I go to the island fairly often to visit family. I'll try out your place soon.

Yep; they are still around and still make great sandwiches. I go there a couple times a year as it's pretty unhealthy.

The Romanburger might be what you're thinking of. It has burger patties, swiss, Genoa salami, and some other luncheon meats which is a sliced loaf made of salami, ham, and bologna. Oh and lettuce, tomato, onion, mayo, and oil seasoning blend to top it off.

Good, now try this one.

Add some peanut butter to that cheese stuffing.

Cook it.

Place on lower bun.

Add your favorite jelly to the top of the hot burger.

Add top bun.

Enjoy.

It's so much better than it sounds. Local place makes them this way and it's delicious.

It's not the subnet burger, it's the normal persons burger.

OP is a hamburger re-enactor that only serves burgers as they were in the days of yore. I am not joking.

Still I salute you for serving red beer. Is it made with clamato (as is proper)?

To suggest ingredients from the Whopper, a 60+ year old burger that is the signature burger of one of the most ubiquitous American burger chains, are something specifically “Californian” is derptastic. I stand by that.

Adding avocado and suggesting that is “west coast” makes sense.

Adding lettuce, tomato, or bacon and acting as if those aren’t toppings associated with burgers throughout the entire country? That’s just derptastic.
While today it’s very common all over, there was a time where lettuce and tomatoes on a burger was a California thing. It was a time before avocados were on everything.
Exactly how far back are you going here? I can’t remember ever having a burger at a restaurant that didn’t have lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickles on the side.
Late 40’s early 50’s.

The big mac was a copy of the big boy.  A number of different chains offered something similar in the 50s.  But they were all sit in diners, maybe drive ins.

And I never heard such nonsense either about lettuce, tomato, and onions being a west coast style.

I love tater tots if done right. They must be crunchy on the outside. Normally I have to fix them myself at home. I also mix some Tobasco sauce and ketchup to dip them in. For the first time I can remember, I found a restaurant in OK that got it right. Heavenly!

I hate soggy, limp fries so most of the time settle for onion rings if hand dipped.

It was never a California thing. In the mid-west that has been the standard hamburger of all time. My personal favorite is mushrooms and thick slice of onion grilled with a thick and juicy burger topped with a slice of Swiss cheese. The bun must be grilled too. Absolutely. Served with crispy tater tots of course.
