Please forgive my ignorance. What are the differences between these two Sigs, and which would you recommend?
Both are on sale, and I can't decide which to get.

The difference between the two are magazine capacities, grip length, and barrel length.  The 226 is considered their full size frame while the 228 is the compact model.  Barrel length is 4.4" versus 3.8" and magazine capacity is 15 versus 12 in 9mm.

Best way to decide is to see if your local range has them as rental guns. My range has both a 226 and 228 in their rental section.

Try them both and see which one feels better to you. They are really almost identical. Just one is smaller than the other.

If the range is not an option go to your local gunstore and try to handle them so you can at least get a feel for each one and see which is more comfortable to you.

if I had it to do over, I think that I'd go for the 228. The 226 and 220 (I have ) are a bit too big for CCW. I use them because that's what I have.

Actually the 228 is 13 rounds. But a 228 will use a 226 magazine so you could carry 15 rounds if that is what you wanted. Mags for the 228 are more expensive than for the 229.

The 228 has the folded steel slide while the newer 226s have a stainless slide. The finish on the newer 226s will last better than the finish in the 226. The 226 is heavier than the 228.

Both are great guns. I carry a 228 with Siglites.

Actually the P226 is a high cap version of the P220 in 9mm, and the P228 is a high-cap version of the P225.  They were developed for the US military's XM-9 competition.  As noted, the P228 is smaller than the P226 and they can use P226 15 or 20rd mags.

I own both P226 and P228 and the P228 is easier to carry concealed(duh).  The P226 makes a better service pistol.  Other than that, they're both Sigs.  What more needs to be said?
