Eh, I've shot XD's and I don't get the hate. Other than Grip Zone. That should be ridiculed. View Quote It has eaten every round put through it with zero malfunction. |

Interesting
I bought my 1st hand gun in 1987 a Beretta 92F. 6 months later a 1911. 7 years army inf and 25 years LEO later I carry a Glock 19 daily. Funny. |

From having worked in a gunstore. Glock = Newb
They could never remember the name of the cool gun they really wanted. Or couldn't handle the price of that slick H&K or Sig Sauer. But, they could always remember Glock. edit: and a Fobus holster. BikerScout Sunny AZ |

Not all inexpensive guns qualify. The Maverick Model 88 is a common 'I just turned 18 and want to buy a gun' gun, but it is also reliable and does whatever an 870P can. Nor do specialized guns of good quality that might often be purchased by beginners for superficial or novelty reasons (e.g. SPAS-12, 'Witness Protection' / Shockwave-style shotguns, Desert Eagle, NAA Mini).
Guns that do tend to signal a neophyte before even meeting the owner are: - artificially inexpensive guns that are far from ideal for any purpose but are pressed into a role, with or without silly modifications (e.g. Mosin-Nagant, SKS) - gimmick guns (e.g. Taurus Judge, snub-nosed (<3in.) magnum revolvers) - guns where the manufacturer's cost-cutting or poor knowledge / capabilities of manufacturing severely affects shootability and/or reliability (e.g. Raven and offshoots, Hi-Point, some Taurus models, American-made AKs) - guns with sound designs but overpriced and overhyped with marketing (e.g. later Kimber pistols, XDs). |

Bushmaster AR with a red/green "Eotech".
I'm not knocking Bushmaster, just saying, 2/3 of the 1st time gun owners I know bought them. Name recognition I guess. |
|
Glock. Especially when they refer to it without the model number and just as "Glock".
|

|
Taurus. "Its as good as a Beretta, better even with the safety in the right place"... no man, no its not.
XD . "Its better than Glock... see , grip, bla bla.." |

I would go with Glock based on people I actually know. I own an XD 45. I like it. It is accurate, doesn’t jam, and fits my huge hands.
Oh, the Glock “Triple Safety” is bull shit. It doesn’t provide adequate protection from neglect discharges. |

Talked about ammo a bit and he mentioned that with .40 you dont need JHPs because its already so powerful (according to the gun counter clerk) and using JHPs might be considered overkill by a jury. Are there just "newbie" guns and what makes them that way? View Quote |

SCCY 9mm pistol
Any time one shows up in one of my LTC classes it is a sure bet the person won't pass the shooting qualification. I also get a lot of brand new Glocks, not been cleaned or shot before, and they limp wrist so bad with weak ammo that "it jams". That is my least favorite expression.... "It jammed". |

My first long gun Benjamin air rifle at 11, Winchester 1300 at about 17, and S&W model 66,
|
|
Damn, I have at least 5 of the firearms mentioned in this thread.
|
|
My first pistol was a West German 226 and my first rifle was a Colt AR.

Gotta admit though, they kinda made it trendy/hip for newbs
|
|
Pistol grip Maverick/Mossberg in cardboard box. Showing up on the firing line without ear protection was also a hint.

Quoted: Lol. Far too expensive for most newbs. View Quote Quoted: wut. Until the VP9 I seriously doubt many people started off with an HK. View Quote That probably should have been my first answer in this thread. When you show up at a match or range and some guy has all the shiny gear and clothes it’s usually a newb. I always am more cautious around them. |

Uncle Mikes anything.
Nylon holster anything. Belts that have zero lateral stability. Photog vests. Touching your belt/gun a lot to make sure it's where it should be (your holster should be good enough that there's no question about where it's at and it's secure). |

I would say a Sig P320 or P250 or even a S&W M&P. Its because when the noob goes to the gun store and sees that they're $100 cheaper then Glocks they cant help it. If they stick with it long enough they'll figure it out.
My first gun was a Glock 19 then a sold it bought and bought a 17 then sold that and bought pretty much every handgun that was under $1000 in the market. Guess what I own a glock 17 and 19 again because they're just right and haven't looked back. |
