I ordered 6 used GI mags last week, and when they arrived I discovered one is steel.  I've never seen a steel 20 round mag and my searches have turned up nothing.

I'm don't think I hit bank, but I am curious.  Is it foreign made maybe?  The floor plate has no markings, neither does the shell.  Black plastic follower it looks like.

A typical AR mag weighs 2.8 oz, the steel mag weighs 5.6.

The only noticeable difference I see are the bumps on the front are larger than a typical AR mag.

Picture below, the one on the right.

Black follower? Possibly AR-Stoner mag. I have quite a few of their SS mags both 20 and 30 rounders. Never had an issue with any of them. I love the things.

Yep, very heavy

When I picked it up I was caught off guard.  Quite a surprise

I'm taking it the range tomorrow to check it out

Not a clue on my end.

As I said I came up with nothing on search.

I had a Guard SSGT tell me I could have a big cardboard box of old 20 rounders years ago.  There must have been 200+ in there. All I could think of was what would happen if I got pulled over between that building and the main gate of the unnamed post.

I passed.  Still kick myself occasionally.

If it works, I don't care if it's plastic

I would just like to know a bit of history, if there is any

CDNN or Federal Arms sold a bunch of steel 20s during the ban that had a black crinkle paint finish.  They were shit too in case you run across any.

Not my video.  These are not steel, but the Promag steel 20s perform about the same based on my experience.

Promag seemed to gear up before the AWB, and tried to capitalize on the market for non-neutered mags

ProMag AR-15 Magazine FAIL !!!!!

It appears that steel mags weren't that common.  That's not a stretch because the weight difference is huge, as I posted above.

I just think it's odd that searches turn up nothing, and I mean nothing.

Assuming of course that my search isn't flawed

Didn't Armalite experiment with them for the AR15/AR18-180 wayyyy back..?

But they would have probably been marked. Just asking.
