Four years of college for decades cost about half a years' worth of median income, until they changed the status of SL debt in the 70s, and has since bloated upward on an unbroken trajectory to around two years of median income today. Over that same period the price of information has plummeted.

All that bloat is now funding the toxic SJW nonsense.

Chapel Hill is cheaper than state I think unless something has changed. Between all the athletic scandals and nepotism stories they liked to have professors remind us how inexpensive it was compared to other options.

If I recall, it was actually inexpensive (although mine was free). I think my total tuition and fees for 4 years would have been under $35k. For four years I really don't consider that too bad. I got a good job I liked pretty quickly too.

Nobody pays that. Duke has a $7 BILLION dollar endowment. The big name schools all inflate their tuition for prestige, then use financial aid from the endowment to knock down the real cost to students.

Similar to helicopter parents, but parents who are more interested in their child's perfection. There's a famous story about a girl in Canada with tiger parents who ended up murdering her parents after getting busted for lying about going to college. Didn't even graduate high school.

Duke gives a LOT of financial aid. Few people pay the sticker price.

I do workshops on how financial aid works, and always use Duke as an example of an expensive school that sometimes costs less than cheaper schools, net of aid.

both, but mostly the latter.

the fact is the individual will get the education they earn regardless the school.

elite colleges serve as a screening mechanisms for companies.

If an average white or Asian kid goes to a Duke or equivalent, you already know he is a hard worker and smart.

A kid can go to Podunk state technical college and may be a hard worker and smart. Or he may be a fucktard.

sports and legacies can obviously skew that.

Grew up mostly in Durham, it was my school of choice and I applied and was accepted. $20K a year was just more than I was willing to spend, even had a partial scholarship too. That was in 1988.
