I wouldn’t say that applies to “Asians” but it is definitely true of Japanese.  Shame is so powerful here fatties usually won’t even leave their house.

It would seem a few laws or policies would need to be rewritten to cut down on whats basically fraud as an adjunct to murder.  Also it seems the cops aren't really allowed to do their jobs by being constrained by cultural practices and limited resources.

Hiding shame which is a huge thing in their culture will be the toughest thing to overcome.  Here in the US a kid gets a C in school they are praised for it, over there they're jumping out of windows.  Throw money into that equation by way of insurance payoffs the temptation to either do someone in or do yourself is obviously way too high.

Here, I'd be happy if we could just shame the fatties into not wearing spandex.

Obviously, you have never been in the barracks of an Infantry platoon. A fat chick in spandex is considered a prize. The bigger, the better. Especially sought after by the brothers.

Nothing new.
As far back as the early 1980's I remember hearing about Japan's high suicide rates.
Very stressful place to live evidently.

Over the years, I've read several times that the Japanese police play it fast and loose when it comes to their violent crime stats.

Japan definitely has a low violent crime rate - it's just not quite as low as their police would have you believe.

Most suicides are deaths by “natural causes”. Honesty would cause dishonor to their family.

Article is not entirely about suicide, it is also about suicide disguised as homicide.

Interestingly they had 27k suicides. That mirrors the US in gun deaths whether suicide or homicide, with a smaller population.

So, even without gubs people will kill themeselves and others.

I'll file this under no duh.

If I worked long hours, every day, and went home to a shoe box in a high rise... I'd off myself too.

Or become a murderer for fun, since I'd have nothing to lose. (article topic)

Or just move to the US and have a good life.

Ties into their 99% confession rate. That means if they decide you are the guilty one they torture you until you'll say you did anything to make it stop. And thanks to the saving face culture even if you were proven innocent later, you'll still never see the light of day because then they'd lose face. You do not want to end up there.

Imagine your clearance rate if solving a case was a matter of you grabbing a random criminal off the street, phone book him into admitting to the Lufthansa Heist, and the judge buys it and the criminals attitude is "I was going to get pinched for something, thems the breaks."

Not anymore. You're thinking of the WWII generation that has since been followed by the Americanized Japanese with their American instituted and ingrained pacifism. They don't have a military, they have a "Self Defense Force" as mandated in their US mandated constitution after the loss of WWII.

Their culture is very interesting.

Will take the blame for life just not to say I screwed up.

While we're were standing on the tracks in Nagoya, a Japanese coworker said that if someone kills themselve the family must pay any late fees or damage that occurs if they do it by train.

Weird stuff.

Aokigahara Forest at the base of Mt. Fuji. There was segment on Josh Gates' show "Destination Truth" where he and his team went there. Deposits of iron ore or something was causing their compasses to constantly spin. Because of that and the vast, dense forest, with many meandering trails, it was easy to get lost in there. They found a tent which was abandoned with a lot of personal items left inside as well as a hole in the ground with pictures of people and ID's placed inside. Pretty creepy area. According to the police a lot of people go in there to commit suicide and they even have a sign posted to discourage it, which obviously doesn't help.
