I can't remember NOT being interested in guns, but it wasn't due to family or exposure.
My first gun was one of those plastic disc-shooting guns that has the magazine in front of the trigger. I was 5, and I was told I was not allowed to shoot my 2yo sister. Of course, within 10 minutes, she had come around the corner as I was chasing the cat (who loved chasing the discs) and popped her in the forehead. Dad took the gun outside and stomped it to bits...
My next experience was at 12 or so. We went to Arkansas from the PRK to see my great uncle and family. My great uncle's son was what I now know is an SOT, and one afternoon, asked us if we'd like to do some shooting. I was sure my folks would say no, but it seemed that being in Arkansas allowed them to forget their PRK rules. So, what did my cousin produce for us to shoot? A suppressed Uzi. :) I remember thinking it was going to "knock me on my butt", but it was very easy to shoot with the stock extended. I got to empty a few mags. We went home with BELTS of live M60 blanks (he has 2!) which we wore like bandoleers. Funny, but within a few days of being back home, we never saw them again. :(
After I turned 21, I decided I wanted a gun; specifically, a high-capacity 9mm. I considered the Beretta, but a friend let me compare his to a Glock 17. No contest. But, alas, I had no money at the time, so I kept buying "Buyer's Guide"s every year and reading about various guns.
Finally, in 1995, a friend of mine (who posts here as DVD Tracker) from the BBS days decided that he too wanted a Glock 17. So, we went to a gun show, and found that one of our local gunshops was having a sale on them; $417 NIB. We have sequentially-serial-numbered Glocks now. :)
Since then, I've barely spend money on anything else...
