I am in the market for a Sar 1 or 2.  I know there are other AK's out there, but only the SAR's meet my requirements in the $350 price range.

My questions are simple:

>How do you like your rifle?
>Had any problems?
>Accuracy?(no gun-rag writers allowed)
>Does the scope mount work well?
BTW does anyone really know how long you can leave Bake-lite AK74 mags loaded?
Thanks Yall

They are great rifles for the money. The finish is nothing fancy, but they get the job done. I've had no problems with my SAR-1. My SAR-2 had a bit of wobble in the buttstock, but a little shim fixed that problem easily. Accuracy is not as good as an AR-15, but it's certainly acceptable and acurate enough for it's purpose. I've never mounted any optics on them. No I don't know the answer about the bakelite mags but I think they're cool as hell.

And to answer the question you DIDN'T ask, if you're going to get one or the other get the SAR-2. Amazingly light recoil and a surprisingly wicked round.

Check out www.AK-47.net for more info on AK variants. Specifically, for SAR 1 and 2, look in the Romanian forum. Happy shooting!

I loike the SAR-2 so much I bought 2.  Excellent round with light recoil.  I have the kobra sight and after doing a 25 meter boresight prior to the range there was no other adjustments needed.  DEAD ON at 75 yds.  My advice is get one while the getting is good.

Get yourself a Shotgun News and buy your SAR-1 out of there. I have seen them for as little as $260 or so. Even with shipping and FFL fees it's a better deal.

SAR-1 nice rifle, nice looking (after re-doing the wood).  Accuracy is so so. Paid $309.  SAR-2 (paid $259.00) same as above but accuracy is up there with some of my ARs. Had to modify the disconnector on both rifles to get rid of the trigger slap.  Over all I'm quite satisfied with both for what I had to pay for them.  I like the SAR-2 much better.

I really like my SAR-1. Nice finish on the one I got, suprising accuracy and cheap assed ammo and accessories. Here is the way I got mine and the way it is now...

But my true love remains:

The SAR 2 is the way to go. 2900 fps + with 60 grain bullet. More accurate by far than any of my AK's. Accessories abound. Mine wears a KVAR US black stock (1" longer) and handguard set and an Informer moly finish. Ammo and mags are cheap.

Have an SR-1 that has never failed to fire, extract, or jam in any way. Bought 7.62x39 because I already had SKS & some ammo, didnt want to add another caliber to my collection since I have quite a few already. Mags are cheap, get them while you can. I have used Chinese, Bulgarian, E. German, all with no problems. Have not mounted scope as I'm happy as it is. SR-2 shoots flater trajectory cartridge, but ammo is not as plentiful, and could become scarce if imports are stopped (i.e. Democrats get back in power!)

Had one of each,

Now I have 1 SAR-1 and 2 SAR-2's.

The 2's are the kewlest IMO if you trick them out. There are many avenues that you can take with SAR-2's that turn them into a truly bad-ass gun with aftermarket hang-on's. Mags are dirt cheap too. That is a big +++

Clot,
Federal Arms Corp in Shotgun News has the Romanian AK-74 (SAR-2) listed for $249.00.
Classic Arms in Shotgun News has SAR-1's listed at $289.00.
Wholesale Guns has SAR-1's listed at $278.00

I must of looked at the Maadi AK's for the price of $260.

I also vote for getting the SAR-2. Its a great rifle/round combination. I have a SAR-1 also and its not as much fun to shoot as the SAR-2.
Both rifles fit and finish are kinda rough. These are definitely shooters, not collector rifles. I put a set of black plastic stocks from K-VAR on my SAR-2 and like shooting it even more. The new stock is almost 1 inch longer and feels more more natural on the trigger.
I would say if you can afford to get both but if not then get the SAR-2.
One thing I should mention is I found that not every gun store carries the AK74 ammo while almost everyone carries the AK47 ammo. You can definitely get the ammo cheaper buying it online/mailorder though. When I bought my SAR-2 I bought 5,000 rounds from ammoman.

I just wanted to add that the scope mount works fine. I ordered a Kobra sight from http://tantal.kalashnikov.guns.ru/
He is a good guy to do business with and the Kobra sight is real nice.

What about the SAR 3?  I was considering getting one so I would have a hassle free cheap shooter that fired the same ammo as my AR.  Anyone have any input on these?  Are the .223 ballistics any good from one?

I have the SAR-1 a really like it. No jams, high cap magazines for $9, and a case of ammo for $85. Shotgun news has some killer prices but ask the dealer to make sure that the sights are straight or you'll be sending it back to Century for repair. One last thing: the buttstock was made for midgets to shoot, shoulder the weapon one time and you'll know what I'm talking about.
