Good video where you can see the scale of the hole. It's enormous.
To be clear, the erosion is going UP the spillway. http://www.sacbee.com/news/state/california/water-and-drought/article131579999.html |

Erosion and Sediment Control is a big part of what I do for a living. The spillway is far enough away from the the dam intentionally (check out the pic,) and the emergency spillway is just a low point where it would wash out everything. |

Well, maybe the incessant whining about drought will ease up a bit. View Quote What is idiotic about some of the people in these positions is how dumb they are. They just had a meeting to discuss ending the emergency drought order yesterday. they said 50 counties in California have some flood warning currently. Every lake is full to the brim damn near with almost record amounts of water in the snowpack and yet they said the order needs to stay in effect. Say what lol yes it happened because feels i guess. |
|
So they are wringing their hands over what to do?
It sounds to me like the ship of options has already sailed. If they don't continue to use the damaged spillway, the emergency spillway WILL get used, whether they like it or not. This is what's known as being painted into a corner. Their lack of planning and deferred maintenance has led to this situation and they have almost zero options. In the military this situation was known as 6P (Prior Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance). |

Looks like it's a better option than using the emergency spillway. View Quote Emergency spillway is farther away from the main structure, if it erodes AWAY from the dam, thats fine. Neither are good options. But keeping the erosion farther away is far more important. fuck your trees and dirt. |

And we're supposed to know where the "biggest dam in the country" is located? I thought the OP meant maybe Grand Coulee or Hoover.

Fill the fucking hole with concrete. It wont last forever but could be a temp fix. Of course the demo later on to repair it correctly will be a MOFO. Or lots and lots of tubes of SL1. Nah, SL-2 so it will set up. I'd hate to be the one that had to mix that many 1.5 gallon pails though! Wait until it dries out and backfill with class 1 riprap and flowable fill concrete to grade, then rebuild the spillway chute. |

The old engineer had the correct answer.
This should be interesting to watch. |

Why not put some big pumps at the top and pump down some big discharge hoses in bottom of original spillway?

Glad to see California was busy repairing and expanding water storage infrastructure during the drought when water levels were low. Didn't have time/money for that. Why the criticism?
California had the choice to spend the money they borrowed on things like maintaining dams and other infrastructure or spending their borrowed money on things like illegal aliens and lgbt or MBG-GT or whatever. Their debt money, their choice. "You pays yer money, and you takes yer choice.'' Priorities, it's all about priorities. One more time ... they are called The Low IQ Left for a reason. Silly people make silly decisions. |

During the drought, I kept telling people the rains would come back, because they always do, and I hope they're ready for what comes. Well, guess they aren't ready.

I think we all knew that with the devastating drought brought on by global warming, this was bound to happen. thanks you fucking fascists for ignoring science. View Quote With all the cooked data it is properly called junk science. Rain, snow, drought, hot, cold and every thing in between, it is nothing new. The earth has been colder and warmer in the past. Its pretty obvious they need to call in Todd Hoffmans crew fix this up.

If I lived down stream or anywhere near the Feather River I would be unassing right now. Oroville,Yuba City, and Sacramento real estate prices are about to take a hit.
Pro Tip: Do not live downstream from any dam.....ever. |

I think they fucked it up more with the test that hole was 3/4 of the current size yesterday morning. The drainage where that dam is located is expected to get 6 inches of rain in the next 24 hours and I heard inflows of 130-150k cfs during this next storm.

Meanwhile like 50 miles away, my local news is covering a small bit of flooding on a local highway that has flooded about 4 times in the last 2 months. Not a peep about the dam in Oroville. LOL.

They raised water rates and spent a crapload of money on incentives and enforcement for drought shit instead of fixing things like this. Now they will cry poverty once again and claim they need to raise water rates again to cover the costs of repairing stuff like this. Oh, and I am sure that global warming will be loudly blamed for the extra rainfall. |

It is just starting here again and I'm about 75 miles west and slightly south of the dam as the crow flies. We are forecasted to get about 4-5 inches here so that means about 6-8 there. LOL |

So just looked at a map to see where exactly the dam is located. Noticed one other issue. Beale AFB looks to be down stream. Not sure if it's in the flood plain if this thing goes.
