The Pentagon is seeking to develop a drone in the next two decades that could strike any spot on Earth from the continental United States within two hours. The so-called Hypersonic Cruise Vehicle, which would be designed to hit targets about 9,000 miles away, should be available by about 2025. Hypersonic means traveling at more than five times the speed of sound. A hypersonic cruise missile engine is seen during testing on May 30, 2003 at NASA's Langley Research Center in Virginia. An LED on a personal locator beacon made by ACR Electronics, Inc. glows during a demonstration at a REI store Tuesday, July 1, 2003, in Seattle. The device sends out a long-range and satellite-assisted signal to search teams in the event a person using the device gets lost or stranded in the outdoors and activates it. A similar device for marine-based activities, known as an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon, has been in wide use for many years, but this is the first application of the technology to climbing, hiking, and other land-based activities.
