That quote was very early in Freeh's reign as Director, and though it's unexcusable, Freeh has come a long way since then. It didn't take him all that long to figure Clinton out, and he's been a mortal enemy of the Clintons for most of his Directorship. In fact, though he has wanted to retire for well over a year, he refused to do so until Clinton was gone, so that Clinton would not have the oppertunity to choose the next Director.
I'm with you that the FBI, like all other government agencies, remains WAY over the line, but Freeh actually WAS fighting for us, particularly during the last few years. He's far from perfect, or even from being on my list of Top 20 candidates for the job, but don't dismiss the fact that his eyes were opened, and once opened, he actually stood up for the average citizen as much as can reasonably be expected from anyone who directs an unConstitutional federal department.
