Dear :

I am writing in reply to your letter of June 9 regarding our signage prohibiting weapons on YMCA property.  It is certainly not our intention to offend anyone with our new signs.

Although the wording of the signs may not meet the code requirements, we believe it does send the intended message.  We believe weapons on the premises are not in the best interest of our members and program participants.  Aside from licensed peace officers, I believe the danger of having individuals in possession of firearms greatly exceeds any potential benefits.

While I certainly respect your opinions on this matter, I hope you understand that we must operate the YMCA in such a manner as to provide the highest degree of safety reasonably achievable.  Our position on firearms is shared by many, if not most, large businesses and places of public accommodation in our community.

I have visited with our board chair, and our signage will not be reconsidered by the board.  We certainly understand your position, and we regret to lose you as a member if this is of great importance to you.

Sincerely,

Wade Todd
President/CEO

That's unfortunate.
One thing I will point out before anyone starts running around boycotting "Y's" everywhere is that each local Y is left to pretty much run themselves.  So the decision by the branch to "ban" guns is not indicative of the national organization's stance.
Also, if the signs don't meet the legal requirements for banning firearms on the premises, I'd remain a member and continue to carry there.

Fuck em. If they aren't serious about the sign, they must not be too serious about what it means! Stay a member and keep carrying in there! If you get caught, so what?  What are they going to do? Ban you? Hell you were going to leave anyway. Just make sure your locker is locked all the friggin time.

I subscribe to the "no guns = no money" philosophy of voting with my wallet, whenever it is reasonable to do so.  I found another gym and got my money back from those clowns.  Why support organizations like that?

Mike, I agree with you on that.  I've never been to a Y, and now that my new apartments have a nice gym, I have no need to.

My reaction to a response like that is that the guy is ignorant.  People like that think that anyone who owns a gun = dangerous.  We know it's simply not true, and sometimes, to me, it feels like bigotry.

But, some of the guys are right, the signs aren't legal, so one could carry there with no legal repercussions.  They could cancel your membership or something like that, but that wouldn't bother you too much, would it?

"Mostly because we are scared shitless of being sued out of existence should some asshole decide that his possession of a firearm doesn't also come with a good deal of responsibility. Since we are pussified enough to think that our signs will keep these types of people away anyway, we figured we'd simply avoid having to deal with lawyers. As for safety, we'll dial 911."

Bunch of limp-wristed cowards!

Damn things have changed.

I workd at the YMCA in the summer of 94.
Well, that was when i first started to get into guns and a fellow co-worker always likes seeing my new toys. So I would bring my new guns in the YMCA work out area for a little show and tell.

Nobody cared at all. This was even in Maryland too!

Locally, The YMCA is known as a place for queers to enjoy their "lifestyle", the sauna is a sticky and nasty place to be avoided by straight men and the showers are used only for group washing.  You will never miss it once you leave.
