What do you consider "extra"?  When I got my sidearm, I only had the 2 that came with the gun.  I am up to 3 now, but one of the origional mags is bad and will be replaced (warranty).  It is my goal to have 6 mags for my sidearm.  Short answer: 4.

I believe 5 mags to be the absolute minimum for a handgun , more for a rifle....

I have lectured my friends many times for only having the mags a gun came with or a few more...

After all in a real life "bad" scenario , mags become disposable , meaning you will probably not have time to pocket them , or pick them up , and in such a scenario (as improbable as it may be ) you will probably not be able to replace those you have lost

well, I would have to say at least 10 for pistol and at least 4 of those must be high cap if the did such a mag, as for a rifle are there ever enough, I have 20, 20 rounder, and 30 30 rounder and I want more. Ronald

counting extra mags (the other one is in the gun)

Rifle => 3 per rifle (30 rnd)
Pistol => 2 per pistol (15 or 17 rnd)

I believe whatever one spends on a pistol one should spend on magazines.

Military type rifles-lots
Semi-auto pistols-at least 2 hi-caps in addition to the 2 that came with it.  4 minimum if no hi-caps.

All the rest, a couple is enough.....for me.

I dont like to have less than 7 mags per handgun

I just ordered a pistol and order 5 mags with it.

Ar mags I guess the price is what stops me. I pick them up if they are in good shape and the price is right. I dont really know how many I have. less than 50 more than 20.

I insist on at least seven magazines for a rifle and six for a pistol.

I have:
5 hi-caps for my G19,
3 17-round hi-caps for my Hi-Power,
2 10-rounders for my XD40,
4 20-rounders for my M14,
6 30-rounders, 20-rounder, and one 9-rounder for my AR,
And finally, an 8-shot magtube on my Ithaca 37.

I'd go with at least 5 for each.

I currently have:

6 8rd 1911 and 2 7rd 1911 mags

4 speedloaders for my revolver

3x 30rd and 3x 20rd mags for my AR.

I had a link to a picture.. this guy had like 4 1911s, and about 130 magazines layed out on a table.  No shit.  130 freakin magazines!!

My minimum standards:

Pistols
- 1 in the gun, 2 spares

Revolvers
-Full load and 2 speedloaders

AR-15
-1 of the 30 rounders in the gun and 6 spares (more if only 20 rounders)

.308 Battle Rifles
-Anywhere from 8-12 20 rounders

To me the pistol is a secondary weapon and therefore mags for it are of less concern than with a carbine or rifle which will usually be my primary weapon.

Ruger PC9GR 9mm carbine:

3 factory 10 rd. magazines
3 factory 15 rd. mags
6 Meggar 20 rd mags

Norinco 1911A1 pistol:

2 Norinco mags
7 USGI contract mags
2 WWII GI mags

Czech CZ52 pistol:

5 factory 8 rd magazines

I like to have a minimum of 5 mags per gun,
even if they never get used.

I think 7 x 30 RD US GI MAG or more should be standard for everyone regardless of AR15 quantities. I think that is what soldiers heading for battle gets. (more, like 10 x 30 RD for SF I think)

And yeah, as some one said above, I think Primary weapon will see more use than secondary (read - pistol).

I recently bought an STG58. In the time it took to get here, I had already bought 30 20rd mags. Then again, FAL mags are cheap.

I don't even know how many AR mags I have right now, somewhere around 130. And I have 15 hi-cap mags for my Para-Ordnance 1445. Another 40 or so for the AK, plus a couple of drums.

OK, I admit it. I'm a mag whore!

I don't have a set number of Mags in mind unless the gun is for a specific purpose or I have more than one gun that takes the same type of Mag.

Walther PPK: 10 or 11
Glock 17: Post-Ban 5 or 6; Preban at least 8 more.
M16: 4 and counting.  Gun show coming up soon.
MAC 11/9:  24 more or less.

Six for a pistol, 10 for a rifle.

For my duty weapons and mags (which are issued), I keep about 9 more pistol magzines loaded in my vehicle, and probably about another 20 or so magazines for the carbine, though to be fair, I usually just keep those handy for a quick range session. ABout half of the AR mags are from my own stock, and the other half are work-issued post bans.

My worst one is my .30 carbine, which I only have four magazines for.

When I bought my SAR-2, I kind of went a little nuts with all of the $3 magazine specials. I have about 30 magazines for that, mostly cheap bakelites, but a few black waffle mags and one RPK 45-rounder.

Through various trades and a few purchases, I've wound up with fifteen (15) for my Beretta 92. That's the most I have for any single pistol. The least I have is five (5) for my Para Ordnance P14 45.

Really, so for a $3,000 Wilson Combat you should buy 300 Chip McCormack 1911 mags?

One could take it to extremes. I have two MK23's and three USPF45's, with a total of forty of the MK23 style magazines between the lot. In my neck of the woods these magazines cost $55.00 a piece, 10 magazines would nearly equal the price of a USP. I stand by my original statement.

Edit to add:
I wouldn't own a McCormack 1911, 1911's are not my thing. Just sold my last 1911 today. No offence to the 1911 crowd.

My rule is 6 mags for each handgun and at least 10 for each rifle, based on the assumption that external rifle mags are more likely to get banged against things and damaged.

The only major exception I have made is with my M1A rifle, in which I have at least 20 mags. Maybe even more.

Unless you have practiced a combat reload and know what you are doing.

Edited to add:  Currently I have 3 for each of my pistols.  3=.45 and 3=9mm  I do plan on getting more, but if you carry more than one pistol, than 3 or 4 for each is really a bit much.  OTH, it's always a good idea to have both weapons of the same caliber so that you can use any mag for either weapon.
