I see the dirty minds have already had thoughts about the potential of a girl with two mouths!
I'm proud of you guys! Pics would be most interesting. I would imagine that this girl was supposed to be twins, but the process didn't go right. I wonder what other anatomical abnormalities she has, and whether she will have problems arising from them? I also wonder, what's the location of the extra parts? Above, below, beside, what? She could be expensive to maintain, too. Imagine having to pay for getting EIGHT wisdom teeth extracted, and buying glasses two pairs at a time! CJ |

The brain of a person who is born with one arm never knows it could have two arms. The eyes are something different - the brain hardwires itself in a permant "search mode" when the vision is low enough, such as when there is only one eye instead of two. It tries to gather enough light to see by automatically moving the eye back and forth very rapidly (this has to be seen to be believed). It could be that the brain is equally adaptable when presented with more than the usual complement. |

In other words, if parts of one "X" copy are FUBAR'd, the other one has enough info for at least partial repairs. The messed-up "XY" fetuses have no backup and just don't make it. This is what I vaguely remember from my human genetics classes, lo, those many years ago. |

Who knows for sure in this case? It stands to reason that if facial and cranial features were doubled, possibly the brain is at least partially doubled as well. And given that the brain is all about making new connections, especially when you're young, it's a distinct possibility that this kid's eyes (all four of them) might be functional in the normal sense, or might become functional as she develops. You realize, if she should get glasses, the other kids will call her "Eight eyes". If both mouths work, and if they have separate vocal cords and both sets are controllable, suddenly you're confronted by the possibility that she could become the first person in history who could sing and accompany herself with her own second voice. Or speak two different languages, simultaneously, making her the world's best candidate as a translator. If everything works, and she lives without complications, she could do some pretty amazing things. CJ |
