I was itching to do some muddy offroad with all the rain we have been having the past three months so I went yo the Spring Valley State Park in York Co. PA. There are some good trails throughout the park but there is one really nice river crossing and mud pit in the back of the park. Now I have taken the X offoad before on some really tough trails, but never a stream crossing like this one. Well, the creek that is normally there isn't that deep or wide but like I said since there was so much rain the water was moving very fast and went up to the middle of my headlights. I have the X in 4wd Low and it made it through with ease! I will have some pics soon of the crossing. I think I am going to try and join an offroad club after I get some better tires this summer. Any of you guys/gals of some pics of your rigs in the act of offroading? [red] Here are the pics. Nothing too hardcore offraod but it was fun! The water got a lot more deep in the middle (the pics dont show that)[/red]

I have heard nothing but Good about the X , Glad to know it lived up to its reputation. I have been driving Nissan/Datsun since 1978, Excellent Vehicles.

All Right! A fellow Xterra owner! I've had mine for 3 years now and haven't got stuck yet! Of course I haven't pushed it as hard as I'd like because I don't know anyone who can get me out if I do get stuck. I think thats about to change though, my tires are getting a little worn (i'm still on the original set) so when i'ts time to get some new ones i'm going to get a more aggressive tread. I think I'm going to get an ARB bumper and a winch also, That way I can get my own self out if I get stuck!! Remember their original slogan? "Looks good dirty!" Hey M4_Aiming_at_U Maybe you could edit the topic to include something like (post your offroading pics!) Anyway like I said I didn't want to push the Xterra too hard but I still wanted to offroad so I got these. His and Hers 4wd Kodiaks. Here's a freind of mine on my wifes, she was pregnant at the time and couldn't ride. Glad to hear that you like your X. I really like mine for the coolness factor, it's yellow, but I've had a few minor disappointments with it. I'm on my fourth remote. Thank goodness that the dealer replaced the others for free because they were running about $100. Also, I have to be right on top of the truck for the remote to function. I see other people using their remotes from a ways away & it always irritates me when I think of the X. The rear window wiper has never fully cleared the rear window from Day one & when I took it to the dealer, well within the warranty period they offered to fix it for only $55. One of the OEM tires developed cracks at about 15K miles & the dealer wouldn't touch it. They said to find a tire dealer who would do the warranty work, so the tire dealer prorated the usage & I got a new tire fairly cheap. The parts are very expensive from the Nissan dealers, too. That in-cabin microfilter was ~ $60 initially & I just bought one the other day for $30. Now, at 80,000 miles, I've got a rattle coming from a small heat shield attached to the exhaust because one of the funky custom bolts has rusted out. It makes the X sound like a piece of junk. I bought the thing right after they came out with the 2000 model in August of 1999. I suppose that I should have waited until they worked out all of the bugs. That was the old methodology when buying an "American" car & I guess that it still holds true for a "foreign" car made in the good ole USA. FWIW, my wife has an Altima that we've been a little disappointed with, too. The car started rusting above the drivers side door when it was about 2 years old & the dealer would not fix it for us. I suppose that I just have a bad dealer, but I know the guy & he seems halfway decent. I haven't heard any especially good things about the other local dealers either. I would like to buy the new Nissan SUV but I sure won't buy for the first year after it comes out. My wife is adamant that she will not have another Nissan because they treated her like an idiot. Anyway, have you seen this website? http://www.xterraownersclub.com/ jfrush, about a year ago, the consensus was that Pirelli Scorpions were the tires to buy for the X. Last time I checked they were ~ $148 installed from Discount Tire in Minnesota, but they were $98, obviously uninstalled, unshipped, etc. from www.tirerack.com. FWIW, I had an 88 Nissan Pathfinder that I put 225,000 miles on & it still ran pretty well.

I wanted Yellow but my wife was VERY opposed to it. Besides 4wd was hard to come by around here and they had a red one on the lot. Mine was a second or third batch Xterra so they had a lot of the bugs worked out. They did have a problem with some of the rear ends though. It seems they put a compound in there to set the gears during manufacture. Several of these left the factory with the compound still in the rear end. It would cause the rear end to whine LOUDLY. Mine started at 2k miles. My dealership was fantastic though and they replaced the whole rear end. I dropped my truck off in the morning and picked it up during my lunch break! Since then 44k miles and not a single problem. ]

I have come to that conclusion also. But i'ts not only cars, the two four wheelers I bought were a brand new design. They had a problem with the design of the waterpumps. If you went through a lot of deep muddy water, it would get grit inside them and eat up the water pump seals. I became quite good at changing the water pumps on those things. They have since redesigned the water pumps for the 2001 and up models. Now with the water pump problem fixed they are FANTASTIC four wheelers. I love 'em! I will however think loooong and hard before buying the first year of a new model anything from now on.

I used to take my Pathfinder out in the Tuskegee National Forest all the time when I lived up that way. Sweet off roading up about 9 miles of sand/gravel creek and other trails and roads. Very nice. Did some major shooting there too. Much fun! I rarely take the thing off road anymore. It need new CV joints I fear... $$$ I had a '72 Land Crusher that would go anywhere. It got much beach time among other fun places. It had a hard top and full doors but spent most of it's life with me stripped. I regret selling that truck VERY, VERY much... We have a 2001 4x4 Explorer which has barely gotten dirty.

Well no joke. But while I do use my truck like it should be (these pics are just my playing pics) I baby the hell out of it. If you saw the prepping my truck got before doing anything you'd understand. Never had a single problem; she's 100% mechanically, body and paint. My service manager can't believe it but yet he can cause he sees me once a month during deer season if I don't have time to do the oil changes my self etc. (I also borrow their lift to get the mud out of the bottom, my lease turns into a hell hole if it rains.)

Ohhh, so the heads of the company get richer and the working American loses a job? Sorry. I would rather buy a car made here in the states by a set of American hands who feeds his American Children. I know everyone is different, and I am not saying which way to buy is better. I just have made up my mind which is better for me. I am not trying to start a fight with anyone. Hell, I love Chevy Trucks.

Umm WTF? Mine was made in Arlington.....thats TEXAS. Like the bowtie. Wanna see the sticker? At least my money went to a true American brand not just some company in Japan that puts factories in the US so people like you can feel justified buying their product. Why the personal (but misdirected) attack M4?

Try not to make yourself a statistic anytime soon. You should not attempt fast moving water that deep. Glad you didn't float away. Not trying to be a dick here. Just hate seeing people doing stuff they don't know is dangerous and getting hurt. BTW, anyone in the market for an X-terra is NOT in the market for a Tahoe/Suburban.

Hey man, I wasn't trying to attack you at all. It was more of a tongue in cheek thing, brother. I love reading your post and threads all over this board and I did not mean to attack you or flame you. That's great to hear yours was made in America, and made in Texas is even better. I apologize. Sometimes, I see people with All kinds of American cars. Trucks and when I tell them many of them are made in Mexico they never believe me till they go home and research it. I was just wondering if you knew. Hey, no hard feelings.

What makes you think this? When I was car shopping, I had enough funds to buy a Tahoe and even test drove three of them. The X was cheaper and had features that were new to the SUV world at the time.

If the VIN starts with a 1, 4, or 5, it's made in the U.S. 3 is for Mexico. 2 is for Canada J is for Japan W is for Germany. Not sure of the other countries. And yes, some Ford and GM/Chevy trucks are made in Mexico, as is the Nissan Sentra.

Actually, mine is a 4.0, I took the WRANGLER, SPORT and 4.0L decals off not long after I got it. I thought it made for a cleaner, more CJ-esque look. Tires are 31/10.50/15 Cooper Discoverer STT's. I've been quite pleased with them.

I don't know how high the snorkle is on the X, but most tubes don't go as high as the headlights. On my jeep, I've routed all snorkles to the vent areas just under the windshield wipers. I've also silicon sealed all of the tubing connections. It's not worth risking a diff....change the fluid....while you're in there you can upgrade to a full synthetic.
