WASHINGTON (AP) - Attorney General John Ashcroft asked Congress Thursday for expanded powers to hold suspected terrorists indefinitely before trials and to let him seek the death penalty or life imprisonment for any terrorist act. Ashcroft told the House Judiciary Committee that the 2001 Patriot Act signed into law after the Sept. 11 attacks should also be expanded to let prosecutors bring charges against anyone who supports or works with suspected terrorist groups as "material supporters."

I hope he doesn't get his wish! After Islamic terrorists are defeated (or they stop by themselves), these laws will still be on the books. Remember that many antigun folks feel that gun shows are arms bizzares, and that shooting ranges are training camps. I for one don't want a future administration assigning the label "terrorist" to things so that these new powers can then be used as a heavy hand.
