U.S. 666 officially renamed U.S. 491

SANTA FE (AP) - The Devil's Highway is no more.

The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials has changed the number of U.S. 666 to U.S. 491, the New Mexico Highway and Transportation Department announced Monday.

Transportation officials from three states applied for a name change to the highway, which runs 194 miles from Gallup north through southwestern Colorado and west to Monticello, Utah.

In the Bible, the Book of Revelations says 666 is the ''number of the beast,'' usually interpreted as Satan or the Antichrist, and the highway was often called ''the Devil's Highway.''

Highway and Transportation Secretary Rhonda Faught had said earlier this year that the number's ''negative connotation'' was one officials didn't want associated with the state because it discouraged tourism and area economic development.

The highway department announced in January it would spend $7.5 million to design improvements to the highway and widen the road to four lanes between Gallup and Shiprock.

The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials is a nonprofit agency that sets national highway and transportation standards, including the renumbering of federal highways.

Those highway signs will become collectors' items now.  How long until we see them on eBay?

Bible thumper here...[rolleyes]  I always thought that was a cool highway number, especially for a desert route.  I always wanted to drive it really fast.  Now that it has been renamed, it doesn't have the 'coolness' factor anymore.

Absolutely, I agree 110%.   RELIGION IS OUT OF CONTROL IN AMERICA....and I for one would like to see more people get back into control.   This is afterall "One nation under God..."   and "In God We Trust".    The perversions that have plagued our society are a clear sign that religion is no longer in control.   The fact that feminists and gays get their skewed views pushed thru gorvernment as laws shows me that religion is out of control.   GET RELIGION BACK IN CONTROL OF THIS COUNTRY!

I also agree 100%, this is pure bs.  The people in charge of this stupid change should be funding it, as well as the changes to all the maps. But unlike the person above, I don't think religion should have ANY control in american politics.

The US has a religion neutral government, and this is part of the genius of its design.  Witness the fights on this board between "Saved" Baptists and Catholics.  These people utimately believe the same thing, yet go a war footing on the execution of worship.

Since you want religion back in control, might I ask which one?  Christianity? Islam? Judaism? Hinduism?  How about that silly Wicca stuff?

I disagree,  it should.   I pray for our country's leaders, I pray for wisdom when it comes to the candidates.  Etc.    As Christ is head of my life, and i inturn vote and voice opinions, that puts religion in touch with our government.   Take it  away and you get, same-sex marriages,  relaxed standards on what is appropriate to show on TV,  increase in porn and soft porn....Bill Clinton in office....(hadda throw that in there as a half hearted joke)

I don't know bout you, but the local food store has taken shooting magazines off the shelf, but my lil boy can still see almost naked women at eye level.  We can get spammed with more offers for pornography that aim to entice and seduce young men into that world.    Focus on the Family did a report on how a few exposures to porn in preteen/early teen years can really enslave a young man's heart for that junk.  

People on this board often complain, gripe and whine about how society is in a downward slide.  Well DUH!   Think about the lack or morals and respect that you whimper and simper about eroding and then look in the Bible....wow!   Looky there the Bible says "Thou shall not commit adultry" - i think cheating spouses can fall under this.   Oh it also tells men how to relate to their wives, wives to husbands, parents to children, and children to parents...."Spare the rod and spoil the child"...?   hey that came from the Bible so when you whine bout not being able to spank your child......how bout those oldies but goodies,  such as murder, stealing, and that ilk....hey this Bible has it all in there.

you can argue all day about how the bible instills morality into people and how it would make a better world if we all believed in god, but then I point you in the direction of the Catholics... even their own priests have comitted acts of pedophelia.  Believing in jesus doesn't take the crime out of the criminal.

I'm not a man of god, I'm an athiest, but don't ever assume I don't have morals.  I'm not gay, I won't ever commit murder/adultry/theft etc, I'm 22 and don't own one pornographic magazine or movie.

Even though im a good citizen that follows the law and uses your 10 basic commandments as a guide- just because I don't follow a religion or have a faith. I don't worship the [i]devil[/i] or your [i]god[/i](both left un-capitalized on purpose), I do however believe that anything is possible, so your god might be real or the next mans god might be real- the point is: I have seen NO proof of an existence of any god, and would be a fool to put faith in ANY book or object. Maybe people are here on Earth to forgo a test, a test of personal fortitude to not follow the crowd and believe in a god- maybe you are here to believe in yourself.
