I have $50K (can get another $25K if needed) and I want to start a little business of some kind. I for the life of me can't think of anything. I would like to do something with guns, gun accessories, hunting or scuba diving. But I can't think of anything that might be a good idea. Investing is not what I want to do with this money. I already have investments. This is cash I put aside to start a little business. Anyone have any ideas on anything? What would you like to do if you had the opportunity?

Well if you find something good let me know! Have you looked into a pawn shop? You could start there and gradually expand it into more of a gun shop, less of a pawn shop.

Pawn shop? Sound like a good Idea...but where do you get all the initial crap to stock for sale? If you just wait for pople to pawn things, you couldn't have any inventory for at least 3 months..... -HS

I'd like to maybe start something on the internet, and go form there. I want something that would be full time. The money I have is 100% risk capital. Someone mentioned before about making aftermarket stocks and handguards for AK's and HK's the way Cavalry Arms does for AR's. It's stuff like that that I would like to be involved in. At least a semi original idea. Instead of just setting up an online store and selling Blackhawk gear and such like everyone else.

I just helped a buddy get set up, due in part to the fact that I sell the equipment he is using, in a job that is mostly weekends and involves a lot of travel.... to airshows, county fairs, and other events. But, he will be able to turn $400-1500 profit a weekend if he does it right, although not every weekend. His initial investmet was about $8000-10000, most of that he can get back if he liquidates because he purchased mostly used equipment and it won't depreciate much.

This sounds interesting. Can you give me more info on it?

I could come up with the cash to do real estate. Problem is, I don't know squat about it. What's a good form of real estate investing? Buy and rent them out? "Flip" them? What?

Find the one thing you love to do and do it well. I started a little hodge podge of a business with a little over 1,000 dollars back in 99. Haven't been doing too bad. I work 3-4 hours a day MAX and 7-8 hrs on sundays doing the flea market circuit.I can make anywhere from 400-800 on a sunday.I also supplement it by selling on eBay here and there. Find a good accountant and get all your permits and licenses in order. One man's junk is another man's treasure and that ain't no bull!!!

I don't have much experience in Real Estate either....But, in my experience of where I live in VA....Houses and lands skyrocket up. My house, for example, I bought it in 96 for 200K and now it valued by the State of VA for 400K. Yes, that's right, I have to pay lots of propery taxes on it but I doubled my money in 5 or 6 years. The State value is much less than the real value of your home or land. So, you may want to go to a hot area that you have good feeling that it will grow. Northern VA is hot right now.

Well, I can tell you to stay out of SCUBA. A neighbor of mine just shut down his business and took a job in another state because of what happened to sales of SCUBA related gear after 9/11.

a low overhead, high profit business w/ little maintenance is an indoor sport arena place. i play soccer at this one right now and it's a cash cow. every 14 weeks they start a new season and it's $575 for a team to play. then they throw on a $28 dollar a year membership fee. i don't think i'll play there again as they are raping their customer, but i think you could have a profitable business w/ less gouging. you just set up a few fields inside a warehouse in a suburban or industrial park (these are going for pennies a square foot right now because of company's 're-engineering' resulting in layoffs and consolidation of physical footprints). you can have soccer, roller hockey, and indoor football. these all require no special enviromental controls like ice hockey would. have an equipment store and refreshment counter there as well and encourage your patrons to hang out after the games. the only worry is liability - have everyone sign away their right to sue in order to play there and have your refs be extra careful about ruffing. make everyone wear protective gear - it's all common sense. you have few employees - a handful at most, and no real costs besides rent and utilities. i think it would be an ideal first business.

My wife wants to start a buissness called the Kitty Bistro. Basicly gorme eats for cats. It would feature food, furniture, and lots of cat toys. Here there are two stores dedicated to dogs like this but nothing for cats. She all ready has an online store that sells T shirts and the like and doesn't make any profit really. I own an internet server and was using it for just personal stuff. How ever a bunch of friends and I got together and we are figureing out how to make it to a full fledged porn site. Call it Hawaiiafterdark.com Since we are in Hawaii we don't think it would be too hard getting a lot of naked asian chicks saying that the islands population base is an asian fetish wet dream. I got the idea from a bunch of guys that are really doing this. It was a local buch of guys that made sport bike and modified car videos. Well they ventured out to porn and they actively recruit. They are rooling in cash and its basicly a 5 man crew. They rotate camera man, light guy, sound guy, and guys banging the chick. Hows that for a job? Their web site is www.808stars.com

I actually own my own biz and its a PITA. It earns well and that's the only reason I stick with it. I don't know what you will end up with but if it involves dealing with the public you have to be willing to work 24/7. At least till it takes off and allows for you to hire help. But then that opens more problems, not only are employees a hassle, there's insurance and taxes to mess with... Of course, if you are willing to do all this and do it well, it can pay off big in X number of years. I don't deal much with the public and am grateful for that. I do have an idea that would do real well I think if you live in a big city or near a college, drop me a line if you are interested... Id post it but don't want to wreck it for my own area. You have to get up early and I am betting you can do it for less than the $50K depending...
