Hand gun laws get tougher By CAMDEN SMITH Political Reporter May 29, 2003 The Territory Government yesterday introduced tough new hand gun laws into Parliament _ but said there was not a hand gun problem in the Territory. Police Minister Paul Henderson said the laws would be introduced as part of national hand gun law changes demanded by the Federal Government after a shooting at a Melbourne university last year. The Firearms Amendment Bill 2003 aimed to restrict the ownership of hand guns, increase the responsibility of hand gun owners and limit the type and calibre of those available to sports shooters. Antique firearms, currently exempt from the Firearms Act, would also have to be registered and their owners licensed. It is expected there will be 1500 fewer hand guns in the NT as a result of the new laws. Mr Henderson said a buyback scheme would be introduced nationally to support the legislation. It was also likely a gun amnesty would be introduced to coincide with the buyback period. Mr Henderson praised the role of the NT Sporting Shooters Association in drafting the new laws, despite not supporting the changes. ``At the end of the day we live in a very transient society and there are issues in other states with significant crime in relation to hand guns,'' Mr Henderson said. ``I would accept that we didn't have a significant or specific problem with illegal hand gun use in the Northern Territory. However, we have to be responsible in terms of playing our part in a national scheme to reduce the number of hand guns to the community that can find their way to criminal elements.'' Police Assistant Commissioner Mark McAdie said the main focus of the changes were larger calibre and shorter barrels. Northern Territory News CRC

a (shitty) solution looking for a problem. The mentality boggles my mind, as does most of the British mentality.

Fuckem all, they caved in once and now the government knows they have no balls, like I said fuckem.

You have to wonder, did they cave or did their gvt. just not care? I'm starting to think that all this BS ('gun control' laws) are being driven by an evil deeper than any persons mind.

You can stick a fork in Australia, they're done. The PM has made it PERFECTLY CLEAR that he hates guns and will do whatever he can to remove them and any influence they have from Australia. When I was growing up I had HUGE admiration for the Aussies, seeing them and their country as a true "last frontier" and home of the last "rugged individualist". Turns out they've become, as a society, soft, whining, scared of their own shadow liberal socialists waiting for the government to care for and protect them from every evil in the world. A true tragedy and great loss to the world.

Great white sharks, the top 10 deadliest snakes in the world, Saltwater crocodiles and the deadly wolf spider. How in the hell are you supposed to protect yourself in Australia? Oh yeah, cops will protect them.

Steady on with the putting us down! As someone just said its the government thats doing this shit to us and they dont care what reality is here in the real world. We had huge demonstrations and widespread non compliance with the post 96 bans. did it make a difference? no. beating your head against a wall just hurts after a while, but dont believe everything you read about what goes on down here. Remember I said non compliance. On a talk show down here last night a American was sprouting of about how you guys can "Buy a machine gun at K mart, I'm telling you" I didn't believe him so dont believe we have lost our balls, even if the "shooting associations" give the pricks a hand does not mean we meekly hand our gear in. I dont paint all "yanks" with the same brush, please show us the same courtesy.

Well said[:D] The fact remains, though, that Australians have lost their right to defend themselves. What we in America hear, is that violent crime is rising in Australia, that your government is covering it up, and that more and more formerly law abiding citizens have now become "criminals" by refusing to turn in their firearms. I'd appreciate your comments.

What I don't understand is how in the world can Austalian police enforce the gun laws if someone didn't register their guns from the beginning?? Australia is a continent the size of the contiguous 48 states and only 17 million people live there! You could just drive out to the middle of New South Wales or South Australia and shoot to your hearts content! Who would hear the gunfire?? The abos? Most of the people in Australia live on the coast and in cities. Just become a subsistence farmer squatting on some small patch of grazing land that no one cares about, go to town once a month or so for some smuggled ammo, never pay taxes, and live happy. Australia doesn't seem like such a bad place. You just have to get away from the people/cities. If a tree falls with no one around to hear it, does it make a sound?

After the 1996 shootings in Tasmania the federal gov decided to get involved in unifying the gun laws in the states. The states didn't like it but were told do it or funding will be cut(blackmail). A "buy back" was implemented and all semis were banned outright, pump shotguns also got the chop, possesion of a prohibited weopon was punishable for up to ten years gaol. Yes just having one, 10 years! Faced with this scenario many took the money and ran. After this occurred then they brought in registration of all firearms, naturally they had no idea how many are really out there but love to point out the success of the system. Most real world estimates put the ratio at 50% registered, consider that SKS's were imported to the tune of about 500 000 rifles over the previous ten years. The whole buyback netted 640 000 weapons. Where did all the rest go when the majority of types handed in were .22 semis and pump shotguns? Despair is hard to keep at bay when a government rides roughshod over a section of the community, most people have no stake in the issue and don't care that it is a symbol of freedom this country has lost. when someone with a sharp stick can nearly take over a plane, I think I'll look after myself and not trust the goverment to keep me safe. The propaganda and lies told down here would make you vomit if you knew the real situation.

thanks plumo... As for those comments on the panel, it's a good show and it's really funny but they pull a lot of crap out of their asses anyway... it's comedians.. what do you expect
