Mine is a Remington 870 Mag. with a side saddle.

Best thing for home defense in my opinion is a shotgun.

Great choice of ammo. Buckshot, birdshot, slugs.

For hunting. Small game, birds, deer with slugs.

The best all-around firearm.

If you can just have one, make it a 12 ga.

Want to see a fight disperse?  Get out of a patrol car with a shotgun. People literally evaporate.

RACKETY-BOOM!  There is just something very satisfying about that sound, though lately I've been getting more into Semi's such as a Remington 11-87.

Not a rifle, but 5 shots inside a 3 inch circle at 200 yards with Hornady slugs ain't bad.

Hevi-shot out to 70 yds ain't too bad either.

They're very good at short ranges (less than 75 yards).

I was in construction for a few months, and we had some doors that couldn't be opened by our locksmith, so we used the breeching load and it oopened the door in under a second, works wonders on dry wall as well. Don't worry, it was a demolition, so there was no one around that could get hurt.

if I knew I had to shoot a bad guy in my house in the dark of night, i would go for the 12 ga. anyday over my pistol or my beloved AR.

shotgun pattern of OO buckshot across a room, big area, not too much accuracy involved.

.45 acp round pattern across same said room, is still .45" and accuracy is a must!

just my 2 cents worth, which don't amount to a hill of beans.

And even if he was, a 1oz slug to the chest - even if stopped by a vest - is the equivalent of being hit by a 2 lb. ball-peen hammer. It will get his attention.

Please excuse my unattentiveness to details. Look at the history of any major conflict. If you underestimate the enemy, you WILL have a problem. I just thought I was making a point, not just about body armor, but underestimation in general.

Not a stupid question.

Yes it does penetrate better, at shorter ranges. The main complaint with steel is that it is light compared to lead, tungstun or "heavy shot". (BTW if using heavy shot in an Itialian shotgun... check often for barrel erosion)

The shotgun is a weapon of assumptions. I assume the attacker will be close, because my shotgun does not have the range of my rifle. I assume the attacker will not be wearing body armor, because it does not penetrate armor like my rifle does. I assume there will be only one attacker, because it is more difficult to make rapid hits on multiple targets, and is far slower to reload than my rifle. When planning to defend the lives of my family, I make no assumptions. Make mine a rifle.

I just gotta ask,

How many people that responded actually have taken a defensive shotgun class??  The shotgun is one of the most flexible tools out there.

(For clarification, a IIA vest will stop 2 3/4" buckshot, but it will require a IIIa to stop 2 3/4" slugs.  That is a lot of vest(heavy) and a lot of dollars.  Seems like a bit much for a burglar sneaking around in the middle of the night.  Of course 3" 3 1/2" magnum slugs will do even more damage.)

Back to my point.  A skilled shotgun user, with a tac-light and a 7 round pump gun will discharge 1 to center mass & then perform a failure drill & discharge 1 to the head.  Body armor ain't gonna help.  He/she will do it faster than a person with a carbine or handgun cause less aim is involved.

Walking point on the DMZ in Korea I had a choice-shotgun or rifle. I chose the rifle. Shotguns have limited range, limited penetration, small magazines, and are slow to reload.

OTOH, one with a flashlight is my next to the bed gun. It's good because I can load low base shot for the first two, then buck, then Remington Copper slugs. If there's still fight in them I can get the FAL from the safe.

Pat, your comment was sensable till this part. You do have to aim with a shotgun even at close range.

ArmdLbrl,

you need to re-examine my post.  I did not state that no aim was required, just less aim.

Lets look at a ocular cavity point of aim.  This is a 4" higb by 7" long area( give or take a couple of inches)  With a carbine you need to get close to that surface area.  If you are slightly high or low, the velocity & energy will probably make up for perfect aim.  With a handgun, you need to get IN that surface area or you will potentially not stop your aggressor.

You can make a box with your two index fingers and two thumbs and see just how small this area is.  Now put it 20 feet away.  That requires pretty good aimed fire.

With a shotgun and 00 buck, you need to be just pointing at the head.  'Nuff said.

As to the thread on a SWAT team breaking into my house???

It really isn't going to matter what I am using because in the end, I am going to be fucked.  If I survive, I am going to get fucked during the legal process.  If I die, I am fucked.

Besides, the probability of encountering a JBT where I live is slim to none.  I am not going to start a different rant, but I live in a rather upscale neighborhood, we haven't had a murder here in like 30 years & I work out with 1/2 of the police officers in area.  I have given two interviews with the FBI & a close family friend is on the FBI HRT.

My biggest concern is when I am driving outside my city limits and into the shitty areas of Detroit(which you almost always have to pass through in SE Mi.)  Car-jacking is a problem in that it can often end in violence.
