I don't think it does any good," said Sensenbrenner, adding: "I'm opposed to prohibiting people from using firearms for legal purposes. I'm in favor of throwing people in jail who use firearms in commission of a crime." Sensenbrenner, whose committee has jurisdiction on the issue, said the House shouldn't do anything unless and until the Senate passes an extension.

At least Tom Petri got it right: Tom Petri of Fond du Lac opposed the ban in 1994 and opposes it now. Like other critics of the law, the Republican complains of false advertising, arguing that true assault weapons are automatic (one pull of the trigger releases a stream of bullets) and are already banned. Semiautomatic weapons require a trigger squeeze for each bullet fired.
