Being I am in Melbourne right now, I can tell you how f*cked up this country is.  Last night I went to the movies -- the price list was as follows:

Adult $14
Child $10
Pensioner $10
Senior Citizen $10
Unemployed $10

WTF?!?!?  They are giving discounts to people who are too lazy to find a job?  It's probably better they don't have any guns!!!

My question is, how do they make you prove that you are employed?

If you're unemployed, how can you afford the ticket?

If you're unemployed, wouldn't you have better things to be doing than going to the movies – like looking for a job?

Unlike the US, here in Aust, the welfare checks just keep coming (approx 1/3 of the Australian Federal govt's yearly budget goes into welfare). Welfare collectors also get a special ID that they can use to claim unemployed discounts.

The unemployed single mothers who keep popping out a baby every year or two and then collecting the welfare checks while living in govt subsidised housing tend to get flogged in the media every now and then. Until the bleeding hearts rally around and say "it's not their fault". Who's fault was it then?

As for the extra gun bans, gun ownership has never been widespread here, and isn't legally protected in the Aust constitution. Like the US, the states have the power to create/change gun laws, but it's the federal government (and a conservative one at that) which has been driving an agenda of standardised and more restrictive gun laws across the country.

I've been thinking of packing my bags and getting out of here for over a year now, but since I don't have a college degree getting a job may not be so easy (anyone looking for a "computer operator" with 15 years experience on VMS and Unix? That's me).

Gareth -- are you familiar with the Melbourne area?  I'd love to do two things while I am here -- the first is shoot some trap or sporting clays.  The other would be to hunt down some fine old English shotguns and bring them back to NY (legally, through import forms).

Can you give me some tips on either?

Phil, I live in Melbourne, will that do? [:)]

I can't help much with antique shotguns, it's not something I have much interest in. I found a link to one place that claims to specialise in English shotguns, they're not too far from where I live and they claim they ship to the US regularly. http://www.mcdonaldsgunshop.com.au/

As for shooting here in Melb, try getting in touch with these guys: http://www.melbournegunclub.com.au/pages/mgcintroduction.html, http://home.vicnet.net.au/~metrogun/, and http://www.claytarget.com.au/. The first two are clubs, the third is a national association which will know of other clubs in the Melbourne area. I don't shoot regularly, and only around the area of my parents farm, which is about 250 miles from Melb.

Both clubs I linked are on the outskirts of town in the nearby hills. If you're not hiring a car, getting there might not be so easy (I ride a motorbike, I don't own a car).
