Because they are just like McDonalds, their service is 99% grade A shit. Some of you have had good service and know people there. Not me, its pimple faced morons who are off dickin around. I would rather wait 30+ min. for a pizza, than try to track down the cashier in sporting goods again. Jason

to the best of my knowledge the only wal-marts that still offer handguns are the stores in alaska. even the special ordering of handguns has stopped.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, your "best" knowledge is WRONG, they most certainly do still carry them on a special order basis (I just checked). "Columbine" has nothing to do with anything. Wal-Fart set their current handgun policy in place in 1991.

Jim_Dandy can you do me a favor. find out what the store number is for your local wal-mart. my store and the others in my area stopped carrying handguns(which were special order only like you said) like 3 or 4 years ago. if i find out that some carry them and just our area pussed out i will be truly pissed. i was told by the higher ups that only alaska still carried handguns. if i get your store number, i can wave this in front of their noses and find out what the hell is going on. thanks for the help

edit: not the phone number of the store, but the store number, should be 4 digits

Oh... My... God... You mean that big bad Wallymart is choosing to put what it deems to be a moral ethical issue ahead of the practice of just making another buck without giving a damn about what filth it sells?
Walmart is not some state-owned chain. They are private and can sell whatever they choose to and NOT sell whatever they choose.

Define "filth"? Is it whatever you and the Waltons find offensive? I hope it's not a "prevailing community standard" sort of thing; a concept which I find reprehensible. I believe WalMarts response is that it's addressing the concerns of it's customers... IE, bowing to the mewlings of the book burning, Moral Majority thought police. No one is forcing these people to buy these products. So why should their mere presence upset them so? WalMart's policy only sends a message of support and encourages that sort of attitude. What if you replace CD's and tapes with guns and ammo. Would you defend them then? If you look closely enough, the same analogy can be seen between businesses' that listen to and bow to the whims of the anti-gunners and morality police (and I have no tolerance for either). Do it for the children is a common theme; which is one reason why I'll never set foot in WalMart.

Yes, WalMart is a private chain and can sell whatever they want. Shop elsewhere they say? The problem is that once WalMart moves into an area, it forces other businesses' to close (nothing wrong there per say... that's what competetion is all about). Except, with the competetion gone, your choice has already been made for you.

I have yet to be convinced that the entire chain is behind the workers being taken advantage of.

The buck has to stop somewhere. If the main office didn't institute the policy, they were at least aware of it.

If it is so, then damn Walmart. I hate that crap.
View Quote

Then without union involvement, how could that sort of crap have been prevented to begin with?

But I also HATE unions and the fact that they hold so many companies hostage (including mine).

There are cases of out of control unions just as there are cases of out of control employers. Unions might be a God send to some... Communism and/or Socialism to others; a necessary evil at best. Would you, I or anyone else want to work 60hrs a week and only get paid for 40? If someone has to get screwed, I'd rather it be them than me.

Under that same company policy as stated above, I see:

"All firearms we sell include trigger locks."

Mine didn't include one. Maybe I should ask for a free one. [:D]

well it goes like this. I go in there for 2 dang items and I expect to get out quick. do i? NOOOOO! They have 2 or 3 lanes open and all the other cashiers and management are standing around talking. the lines that are open are backed into the isles. You ask a cashier to check you out and all you get is a bored/sarcastic look and they go back to what theyre doing. The garden department is backed into the isles and sporting goods and electronics wont let you check out because your items didnt come from "that" department. [pissed]

kmart's even worse. they operate on a skeleton crew. on any given day there are 10 times as many customers as there are employees. and thats on the ultra slow days.

when it comes to guns or ammo or shooting/sporting related things I turn to the local gun stores. for me its either rex's gunsnammo in hendersonville or marcum's buck and bass in downtown Brevard [:D]

All of our local Walmarts have been replaced by "Super" Walmarts. Once in the store, it's a long roadmarch from sporting goods to electronics, and from electronics to grocery. But let's face it; Walmart has succeeded in dominating the retail market. Yes, the lines are still long and the service spotty, but the wife and I keep going back. I hate shopping anyway, so there is the benefit of one-stop shopping.

Panzer Out

Umm.. you're wack.

Target is a global company with Euro peacenick ties that are part of the One World Order.  If they didn't sell better quality kids clothes so cheap, I wouldn't let my wife within 2 miles of that store.

And If that damn Wal-mart didn't sell ammo so easily, I wouldn't shop there either (except for the groceries - which means that the meat department and the produce department are better than the freakin' Kroger)

Grow up!

Yes, I'm saying that Wal-mart is better than Target.  As a God fearing, conservative, gun-owning, President Bush-loving, happily married red blooded American male...  Yes - The damn Wally world is better than commie Target.

IIRC it had something to do with a whack job buying ammos, loading a gun and killing one of their employees and the resulting settlement with said employees family.

There was an incident that resulted in the "escort service" to the front door when you buy a firearm now, but that occurred after the current handgun policy was set into place.

No, I can't get it. Look it up on the web. I'm in Oklahoma. Wal-Fart also tried to pull some bullshit on me that it was against the law to sell ammunition before 9:00 A.M. Then they backpedaled and said it was corporate policy, then they backpedaled again and said it was their manager's policy.

They list handguns as special order items in the stores in my area. That is, if you talk to the manager.

Far as I'm concerned, they're about the same as any other retail store these days. The employees are almost all morons who know nothing about what you are trying to buy, and a lot of the stuff they sell is crap. If you already know about what you are trying to buy, you can get a good deal, but it can be hit-or-miss if you don't.

I haven't bought any guns or ammo there, mostly due to a tight budget, but they do appear to sell those cheap Win 9mm 100rnd boxes. I might have to pick one up if I don't get around to ordering more from Ammoman soon. I did buy a paintball gun there a few weeks ago, and nobody bugged me about that, FWIW.

One time I also saw what appeared to be a muzzleloading rifle in one of those plastic packages (the kind that look like they split in two but never actually open without being cut to bits) out in the aisles (not locked up). The packaging didn't seem very clear on what it was, but the package seemed too heavy for it to be anything but a firearm.

#1)  Shrill announcments over PA system.  I hear more calming tornado alerts than the regular PA activity at Wal-mart.  There's no reason to act like someone's about to die just because you need a pick-up from the toy department.

#2)  Guilt-trip-assn-of-the-week begging for money out front.  I hate running a gauntlet of don't-make-eye contact to go pick up a couple items.

#3)  The customers.  Frankly, I can't stand the fricken customers.  Yea, we all have to shop, and the bottom disporportionally shops at wal-mart.  Not exactly the healthiest group of folks to feast your eyes on.

#4)  The crowds.  Nothing like near death parking lot experiences, followed by wall to wall people.  I don't even get a shopping cart when I go now, too difficult to navigate the store.  Almost as bad as sample day at Sam's, but that's another story.  Fortunately I don't go too often.

#5)  "Welcome to Wal-mart - Made in China"

#6)  Product quality.  If you need an item where any quality will do, Wal-mart's the place.  If you want any medium of quality, better get the absolute most expensive one you can find.  Better yet, just go to Target.

#7)  Wrong size - wrong color - or out of stock

#8)  Reattaching the oil cap in the Garage is apparently optional

#9)  ALWAYS have to wonder around trying to track down the sporting goods counter guy

After all that, I still shop there occasionally because it's basically the general store of our time.  It's not all bad, just mostly.

Probably was...

Black Powder weapons are considered 'Antique' by the ATF. They are exempt from the GCA because of this. Anyone can walk in to a store, buy a muzzle-loader as if it were a pack of AA batteries, and walk out... Gander Mountain also just hangs them from a rack...

Doesn't matter... Those people are not slaves. They are not forced at gunpoint to work for WalMart. Therefore, they deserve only as much as WalMart is willing to pay them. If they feel that they are 'better than that', they should quit and go elsewhere. If enough do, WalMart will have to do something to keep their employees. BUT not liking your wage is no excuse to try and force your employer to pay you more. If you don't like the pay, get out of the company...

And YES, a union would KILL WalMart.

Why?

Because WalMart is not RadioShack or Boston Store. People do not shop at WalMart because the employees know what they're doing, or because WalMart carries high-end quality merchandise (Well, they sell Rem 700s... But..). They shop at WalMart because they want rock-bottom prices...

Now, if the Union comes in and forces higher pay and more benefits, they will have also just forced a price hike... Prices go up, and bye-bye WalMart (A similar phenomenon (combined with (or maybe the phenomenon is causing) economic advancement out of a manufacturing economy) is killing manufacturing in the USA: Unions have bargained their members out of jobs, because they've raised the bar so high that management just leaves the country).

It could happen.
The worst thing about the big unions is that they seek to drive a wedge between the workers and the company.  Once that happens things go downhill fast.  You may not have seen it, but I have.
The people at Wal-Mart are not slaves, they are free to shop their skills on the open market.   It is just that the market does not bear much for retail work.  (I know, I worked retail years ago.)

Riiiight... Gotta love a company that forces workers (under threat of termination) to work off the clock...

That fires employees for dating one another...

That uses heavy-handed tactics (spying, coercion, threats) to discourage employees from even discussing union activities on their own time...

That refuses to carry CD's and tapes it deems "inappropriate" either because of lyrical content or cover art.

I've heard those allegations as well, and I don't doubt that there is some truth in it.  But it pales in comparison to the Teamsters beating "scabs" to death for crossing picket lines.  Nothing is perfect, I guess.

As far as the inappropriate material goes, they have a right to stock whatever they want.  Just as you have a right to shop elsewhere.  Voice your opinion to them and move on if they aren't receptive to your needs as a consumer.
