Never been a Star Wars fan. Although I can appreciate the innovation and understand those who do like the series, I have never been able to get through an entire episode without falling asleep.

Jason Statham from Snatch is good. He would be excellant in a commando type role in a war movie.

The best character in Star Wars is Han Solo...at least the most amusing.  Solo & Ash from Evil Dead/Army Of Darkness are cut from the same cloth.

Characters (i.e. not the actors):

#1, without a doubt: Bond, James Bond

Runners up (in no perticular order):
Maverick
Riggs (Mel Gibson's character in the LW series)
Han Solo

That's all I can come up with off the top of my head... I don't usually notice individual characters separate from the movie...

If anyone here has seen The Frighteners then they would agree that the #1 character from any movie would be the FBI detective Special Agent Dammers from that flick.
