When did the US Army *start* using blanks in training?

I know as late as WWII they had recruits crawling under barbed wire and live machine gun fire.  I'm assuming WWI was even more archaic.

They were still using live ammunition at MAC-MOUT ranges in the early 90s when I was in. Granted, we weren't recruits, but it still gets your attention when guys are shooting pop-up Ivan targets right next to you.

Wonder how many "wash out" due to excessive blood loss?

If I was a trainee, I would not worry about anyone seeing the brown stain in my pants.

We did the standard 11b low crawl at benning with M60s firing overhead, but at least not at our head.

Kopassus had an issue with 'human rights violations'.  Are you sure those were trainees?

There is always countries that will believe negligent training and flashy drills is a good substitute for actual ability.

Those same countries are sweating bullets waiting for the next coup and just hoping someone doesn't drink their milkshake.

they still did it in Basic....well at least OSUT circa 2005.

Blasted chaotic music and background sounds over big-ass loudspeakers.

The were firing probably 10 feet over the course. Surprising as a recruit how close 10ft can seem.

They also put little bits of C4 into big wooden pits filled with sand throughout the course to simulate mortars or artillery landing near you. Didn't really come close to what it was like to receive incoming fire, indirect, or an IED in real life.

We had 2 Indonesian officers go through a school with us, and I highly doubt the word drill was in their vocabulary.
I don't think this sort of training is the norm for their military.

If it involves terribly dangerous training and crawling in a ditch with rifle fire, i'm sure Yeager will be all over it.

I'm pretty sure they were aiming at the crawlers, that's pretty much the expected hit ratio for AKs and AK shooters

I support this training methodology for Muslims countries.

Ya know.  So they're prepped to fight terrorism.

Meh.

Getting shot as a private in the Indonesian Army is probably only slightly less shitty than not getting shot as a private in the Indonesian Army...

That exercise might very well have been the most pleasant thing those guys did all week.
