When did the US Army *start* using blanks in training?
I know as late as WWII they had recruits crawling under barbed wire and live machine gun fire. I'm assuming WWI was even more archaic. |

Granted, we weren't recruits, but it still gets your attention when guys are shooting pop-up Ivan targets right next to you. |

We did the standard 11b low crawl at benning with M60s firing overhead, but at least not at our head. |

There is always countries that will believe negligent training and flashy drills is a good substitute for actual ability.
Those same countries are sweating bullets waiting for the next coup and just hoping someone doesn't drink their milkshake. |

The were firing probably 10 feet over the course. Surprising as a recruit how close 10ft can seem. They also put little bits of C4 into big wooden pits filled with sand throughout the course to simulate mortars or artillery landing near you. Didn't really come close to what it was like to receive incoming fire, indirect, or an IED in real life. |
