Weren't we told there were no rivets on the Liberty Ship hulls....all welded? Maybe on some other timeline! Totally bazillions of rivets used in this one! Click To View Spoiler Rivets holding the deck down. Rivets holding the rivets down. I like this plan!

More details are starting to emerge on our 7 foot Liberty Ship. Hopefully things will go a little faster as they have a method for organizing who is making what.    On our 14ft Liberty ship, we had some final shaping using the best sander to knock down edges that would cause the skin to crease when attaching.  Skinning went quickly yesterday afternoon. There are several students who had experience working on the Tractor, and Marine One(is a helicopter!). Their experience made things go quicker, and they were passing on that technique to newer students. We also worked on symmetry. Do one side, then the exact same panel on the opposite side.   Paper mache' started on the bow section after all of the foam was done. We still have a bit of bondo to put over the void area.

Update 1/21
We are done with foam.....I hope.  Paper mache' on the entire hull, and skinning are now the direction of the day for the 14 foot Liberty Ship.  They really have a handle on the skinning. I'm impressed with how quickly they are doing this, and how well it's going. There have been very few mess ups, or major creases that needed reworked.    As a throw back to the origins of this thread......Somewhere there is a picture of a young lady "underwater welding" on the U-Boat hull with this same set of flippers and masks. We got to goofing around yesterday a bit, and I told them about the flippers and mask, and that it was still sitting on the shelf where she left them.  The 7ft Liberty Ship is getting more and more 3D printed parts assembled. This is starting to look pretty good.  We think we can use the same CAD drawings for some of the parts on the 14ft version. Our printers aren't big enough to print them in whole, so they will have to be divided up into smaller bits.

Deck details made some major progress yesterday. We've got quite a few students transferring from our Mission To Mars to our Liberty ships.     Surprisingly, our 14foot Liberty Ship got the entire skin finished, and is now being textured with paper mache patches of 2"x3". It's the new "Rivets".    |

Looking great! You have a Nice 3D Printer if the deck gun was all in one go! What are you using to simulate the ribbed hatches not he Liberty ship deck? Look like boards glued together but I am guessing something simpler.

Our U-Boat clock is much closer to done. We still need the wooden rings around the outside that we can sculpt on. Those hopefully can get cut out soon.  This is up there with riveting and tiles......just not near as many.     Look! Happy Children!  Deck details are going well on our 7ft version.

The clock is Beautiful! Very accurate detail, the hands look great as well (I'm assuming they still work).

Monday's can seem like this is the proper way to approach things.   As to brass's question about the torpedo hole in our 14 foot version, yes. We went down to the U-Boat display and did a little planning. We decided on a slightly different position for our larger Liberty ship.....like on the opposite side of the room. It will have a similar dive to the U-Boat for a little continuity in our display, and because it will offer the best advantage for our viewers.We have ordered lights, and the 1100 plastic bubble balls have come in already. We want to do something similar to the bubbles on our U-Boat. There was much discussion as to when we should begin the sculpture of the hole, and we came to a consensus that we wanted the base structure in place before we get all of our detail texture(panels) on the hull. They were all too eager to slice into our pretty hull.    We are attaching wires inside the hull to our main beam. These will help to support and sculpt our explosion/air/oil mixture.  We also started sculpting plexiglass flows that will be a platform for our bubbles.

Little panels waiting to be paper mache'd onto the hull. I'm hoping we can get done with the 14ft hull today. We need to get the waterlines marked on both ships, and the 14' flipped so we can work on the torpedo damage area from inside the ship. I literally just had a student walk in with little panels cut out from pop cans, wondering if we could redo the entire ship with them.  He worked on different methods to get the panels flat. They looked great, but I'd end up in a ditch somewhere near the train station between Billings MT and here if I suggested we cover the entire hull with them. I also explained to him the heavier weight it would add, difficulty in getting the glue to attach them all the way round the edges, and the slowness of cutting each one out and prepping them. He's a great student.  Love his eagerness to contribute, and mechanical engineering ideas. He's currently reworking our drive system on the John Deere Space tractor too.    Someone got glue on the plexigasss..... team members are not impressed.   At the end of the day, things get a little crazy at times.  More sculpting of our escaping air from the torpedo damage area   We tried a couple different things, but this is how we made the hull damage a little more stable. These are different sizes of cardboard tubes, but to fit.  The deck details on our 7ft Liberty Ship are doing great.    |

One of my team leaders decided he needed to paper mache his student of the month nomination to the hull of the 14ft Liberty Ship.  We managed to finish the paper mache texture on the entire 14foot hull yesterday.  Using the cardboard tubes to reinforce the blast damage.  Students are now working to sculpt the interior of the ship damage area.  They are also working on fixing the stern contour so we can attach a rudder and propeller.   They are beginning to get hooked on all the little details on the 1/64th scale model.  Its fun discussing and arguing what materials to use where and what method we should use to attach everything.    |

This guy.....  Students are working to clean up the waterline on both boats. Little details on deck are slowly appearing. Rework, making them straight, always seems to be necessary.  My Seniors had this look on their faces when evaluating some of the work that got done late in the day yesterday.....

Maybe put paper mache over the hardware strapping holes so it isn't as clear what sort of materials you used? Have a big press in metal shop to rip some of that hardware strap inn half or more ripped/natural ends? Even ripped paper won't look so "cut" as the perforated metal strips.

We got a base coat of black sprayed into the blast area. We've talked about more details like plumbing, wiring, and structural damage that needs to be added. Problem is, much of all of this will be covered by our cloud of bubbles.   This will be the top ring for the smoke stack on our 1/64th scale model.  Cargo hold lids being put together for the 14ft Liberty ship.  After getting the rudders built, we have a problem. The shapes just aren't right. Rework time on our keel.     Hopefully, I can get down and get some paint purchased for our hulls today. |
