I was just watching the news about the "Free Trade" meetings in Canada and they showed a confinscated "arsenal" of smoke grenades, flares, clubs and sheilds (to use for attacking police). I guess they have over 1600 cops and soldiers on duty guarding the meetings. Buisinesses have boarded up and closed down. They're expecting "massive riots."

Anyone else think they're pissed?

god-damned freeloading canadians! They have no more respect for free speech than they do for the right to bear arms. In every one of my "useful" book catalogs, there are several with a foonote saying "Not for sale in Canada." I'm just waiting for an L.A. or Seattle type riot. Where are their police gonna be then? All the Canadian polices have to do is throw cheese sticks and cans of Molson out into the crowds and the people will be so preoccupied with them that they will forget whatever it was they were rioting about.

I think that these are a bunch of socialist, hippie, generation X Seatle types who have nothing better to do. They are basically all either unemployed, students, or just plain bums. They are afraid capitalism might take hold, and they might loose all their prescious handouts. Most are environmentalist whacko, animal rights vegetarians who should be given a swift kick in the ass. Enough said.

Happening right now in buffalo....facility where i work is on alert and is central ops for local leo`s who are expecting possible riot, similar to free trade protest in seattle last year.....don`t blame the canadians....it is a "mixed" group of "rebellious" individuals, who roam around on this anti-free trade issue....and organize protests based on certain international companies obtaining contracts for thier services.....it may be a commercial endeavor, or someone wishing to gain notariety for thier views, but they enlist the involvement of college students who traditionaly are willing to take up issue with established policy...and physically show thier support for a cause....do not have sufficient facts to make a definite opinion, but this will be getting more and more national attention this year. it IS said that they work out of ottawa, but it IS not the "canadians" as was givin to in this post!

I was watching it and couldn't stop laughing.  Not that I think that riots are funny but because how the tactics were being played out.

There was a huge police line across the street firing tear gas canisters into the crowd in the street.  The people in the crowd picked up the tear gas canisters and through them right into the middle of the police line.  Canister after canister ended up right back where it came from.  Also the wind was blowing towards the police so all the tear gas started at the front of the police line and was blowing into the perimeter area.

It was basically like watching this graphic except in real life.

The vast majority of these people are not even Canadians.  This the same group of moronic protesters that were at Seattle.  They are professional, left wing protestors who travel around to protest whatever.  They need to get a job and a life.

The so called WTO "riot" here in Seattle was caused principly by over-reacting LEO's coupled by a one stupid ass mayor.  At least that's my view, and I WAS here.  The "media" will no doubt distort Ottowa in the same manner that what happened here was distorted.  Just my opinion [8D]

Actually South Park was a minor hit here in Canada.  The series does Ok but the movie was only fair.

Have you seen Canadian Bacon with John Candy?  Now that is a funny movie!!!  Its yet another movie based upon a US invasion of Canada.  It seems you guys will never give up after your loss in the war of 1812.

That reminds me of why I bought my first Sport Utility Rifle.  Its an AK-84S2.  Basically an AK but chambered for 5.56 instead of 7.62x39.  I went for this for the simple fact that it would be easier to supply myself with ammuntion taken from invading troops.....Mind you this was back when Canada was equipped with FNs in 7.62x51, Russia had 7.62x39 and the USA?????/

Well I am sure that you get the point.

Oh Tommyt....Canada's Government sucks ass sure enough but there are some freedom fighters sticking it out up here.  Just like you still have some left in Kali!!

I don't know what War of 1812 you are thinking about...but the US didn't lose.

Gee you Americans really do suck at HISTORY...Unless its history you like.

The following was taken from

http://www.multied.com/1812/

You can read all about it yourselves..  Just do a search for "war of 1812"

I am not sure what you Americans call it....

The War of 1812 is one of the forgotten wars of the United States. The war lasted for over two years, and while it ended much like it started; in stalemate; it was in fact a war that once and for all confirmed American Independence. The offensive actions of the United States failed in every attempt to capture Canada. On the other hand, the British army was successfully stopped when it attempted to capture Baltimore and New Orleans. There were a number of American naval victories in which American vessels proved themselves superior to similarly sized British vessels. These victories coming after victories in the Quasi War (an even more forgotten war) launched American naval traditions

Please note... THE USA invaded Canada wanting all of the Great lakes up to the 54th Parallel....I am a Canadian,, We own the land...ergo THE USA LOST!!

Seems pretty clear to me..

And the Canadians burned the White House.  We sure won THAT one.

Those Canadians should quit f-cking around, and stop thinking they are superior to good ole America.I mean....it's the truth here....the  only reason why they have not been invaded by some powerful country,is because they are hiding beneath our awesome tactical nuclear umbrella. If we were not here,Canada would be a part of the soviet empire.

Canada should just be happy we haven't made them the 51st state.  I think it's because we're hoping Puerto Rico will be 51 and then CA can be 52.

regarding the WAR of 1812. it's surely not forgotten.  i do believe i remember reading about it in my history lessons.

and let's not forget that Canada wasn't Canada back then.  it was British and French.  major difference.  likewise, we went to war with britian in part because the pansies were impressing US sailors to fight on their warships in their war against France.

and we certainly did lose the damn battle.  you don't see any of us here pledging allegiance to Her Grace, the Queen of England, now do ya?

did my own research.  this doesn't sound like we lost (from www.historychannel.com):

"Since August 1814 the two sides had been negotiating a settlement at Ghent in Belgium. When the British heard of the retreat of their army in the Battle of Plattsburg Bay, they lost interest in continuing the war. On December 24 the Treaty of Ghent was signed. It provided for the mutual restoration of territory captured by both sides. With the ending of the European war, the problem of American neutral rights was no longer an issue."

sound more like the brits signed the treaty when they thought they were gonna lose so they could say they didn't lose.

It was the British, under Maj. Gen. Robert Ross that burned the White House, Capital, and other buildings in Wasington. NOT the Canadians. That same force it's ass stomped at Baltimore with heavy losses, killing MGen Ross. THAT doesnt sound like a loss to me.

I can see how this war might not be considered a win, but I don't see how it could be considered a loss. The US's primary reason for declaring war was not to seize land in Canada. (although that was an added incentive) The main reason was maritime rights.

One reason why I think (from the facts I have) the British agreed to a treaty is because they could not afford to send troops, ships and supplies to the States and fight the French at the same time. The war with France had a MUCH higer priority for them. A few reasons why the US agreed to a treaty is because the war was getting too long, expensive, and there was growing fear that states in New England might secede from the Union.

Sounds like a stalemate to me.

I think before Canadians start claiming they won a war against the US, they should try to fight one without the English holding their hand the entire time and doing 95% of the fighting for them.

[#42]
Actually ARLADY and Deathby you are mostly correct.  However there was more to the land grab then you seem to make out.  The battle cry for the USA at the time was 54-40 or FIGHT!!!  This was due to the US demand that they have all the territory South of the 54th Parallel ( not sure of the 40 part).  As for the British doing most of the fighting, that is just plain WRONG.  Most of the fighting was completed by Canadian Militas along with Native Troops.  It w
as a Militia and Indian Force that took Fort Detroit without a shot being fired.  The British were as you said to busy fighting the French in Europe.  Which brings me to yet another error.  The French were driven our of Canada in 1759 after the Battle of Quebec.
Once England defeated Napolean they had all the power in the world.  They could have easily started sending troops to take out the USA but as you pointed out it would have been very costly.  But could you imagine the damage that could have been done?
My claim that Canada won the war is not predicated upon the USA surrendering.  THE USA INVADED....I am Canadian not American...Ergo the USA lost...
If the US had won I would be an American, plain and simple.
Your troops burned York ( now Toronto) we burned Washington. Your troops won most of the battles on your territory. We won ALL of the battles on ours..
The bottom line is you started it and could not finish it.......
This does not mean that I hate Americans today as this happened almost 200 years ago and is moot.  However as you can see from many of the above posts Americans have this terrible tendancy to inslut others in some vain idea of superiority....it is a shame indeed.

Oh yet another thing.  In evey war Canada has ever been in it has done proportionally more service than England....or the USA. ( Desert Storm not included)

Stormbringer- I think you need to do more research on how many Canadians served in the British Forces during the war and also do more research on the battles you lost.

This conversation could go on forever, and to tell the truth, its not worth my time. As you said, it happened almost 200 years ago, so whatever. Let's just get back to talking about ARs......

Death,  the 54-40 is 54 degrees, 40 minutes.  I do know a lot of canadians who are good people, but their government DOES SUCK.  (And their cigarettes, too.  Good beer, but that stuff you call bacon, ISN'T)  Enough already, good day, eh?

Mmmkay, now we are just in denial.

And now matter how ya bend it, Stormbringer, the US did not lose.  I was always taught the war was a stalemate...and we infact won our independence again, got the damn Brits off our backs for good...so in my eyes that is a great prize alone.
