Guys, perhaps you can help me.  I am searching for a memory upgrade for my HP Pavillion 8700 series (I think 8780) computer.  It has (2) 64MB RAM chips (RDRAM) - this is what is on the chips themselves "64MB/4d non ECC 600-53  G100 S110"

I am having a frustratingly difficult time finding compatible memory.  I'd like the go to at least 256MB of RAM - therefore I either need (2) 128MB chips or (2) 64MB chips that I'll then be able to use with my existing (2) 64MB chips.

I'm afraid to buy RAM off the internet since there are so many different types, numbers, speeds, etc.  Most of the sites don't do a very good job of helping you out with compatibility issues.

They have what you need.  Looks like any 168 pin pc-100 memory would work.

Crucial.com can make sure you get the correct RAM. Otherwise, someone here should know. HP 'should' list what is compatible with your Pavilion.

I second that.
crucial.com is probly the best.
They have a little menu so you pick the right ram for your machine.
They also have free 2nd day shipping.
I'm in KansasCity and it usually comes next day for me.

I've checked with Crucial - they don't carry RDRAM for the HP Pavillion series.

Crucial doesn't make RIMMS.  I think Kingston still does.  Check www.newegg.com, they have the Kingston 128MB RIMMS at $54 + free shipping.  RDRAM is on its way out, so if you want more RAM, get it now, and get as much as you can afford.

And obviously, don't buy PC100 or PC133 SDRAM SIMMS for a comp that takes RIMMS. [;)]

Sorry guys, you are wrong.  PC 100 or PC 133 will NOT work in Grey's computer.

Greywolf has RDRAM in his system, which in this case, would be PC600.  PC 100 and 133 won't even fit in the slot.

Grey, what you'd likely want to do is get some PC800, probably a pair.  I don't know if your machine uses a single or dual channel controller.  How many slots are there for the memory?

HP does list it.  It looks like only specific models got RIMMS where everything else got DIMMS.

Here's the 1G pc info which came up on a search for 8780 in the support area quick find: http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/document.jhtml?reg=&cc=&prodId=hppavilion19854&lc=en&docName=bph05597

Grey, double check the model.  That seems to have the most bearing on what you need.  HP's model finding info: http://www.hp.com/cgi-bin/cposupport/get_doc.pl?SNI=pvpc&LC=personal_computing&Tfile=bph07555&Smplr=Y

rdram or rimm are 184 pin

links for several different types

worthwhile to download a demo copy of Sisoft Sandra.  It will give you all of the specs of the motherboard and memory so you will know what is compatible.

I just bought 512MB of PC800 RDRAM for my Dell from this place:

http://www.upgradenation.com/systemmemory.html

I recommend them.  Give them a call, they should be able to get you what you need.

Remember you need to get RDRAM in pairs

DOH - it is an HP Pavillion 9870 - got the model number wrong.  And yes, it is RDRAM.  I have a total of 4 memory slots.  Two have 64 MB chips in them right now, and the other two slots have what appear to be "blanks" in them.

So, given all that, where can I go to get either 2 more 64MB chips that won't conflict (someone emailed me and said mine are 45ns whereas all the new RDRAM chips are 40ns and may cause a conflict) or just get 2 128MB chips?

Thanks, guys!

Okay so based on the new model, which the search results make a whole hell of a lot more sense, we get this:

The RAM configuration for HP Pavilions.  RIMMS are near the bottom: http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/document.jhtml?lc=en&docName=bph03886&prodId=hppavilion28623#P102_9957

According to HP's upgrade or Part Finder thingy they want $123 for a 64M PC600 module.  hehehe $123 dollars....somebody's on crack over there: http://partsurfer.hp.com/cgi-bin/spi/main?sel_flg=partlist&model=P3952A&HP_model=&modname=Pavilion+9870&template=secondary&plist_sval=Memory&plist_styp=subcat&dealer_id=&keysel=Memory&catsel=%3F&ptypsel=%3F&strsrch=

Best bet at this point is go to Pricewatch and under memory there is a RIMMS section.  Just look for anything that's PC600 compatible and fits within the parameters of the HP RIMM guide.
