Keep it.  Plus every time you shoot it, it will remind you of the great wife you have.

Keep the Garand.
First – It’s a gift, and as such is a symbol of the regard your wife holds for you.
Second - Carbines are not as cool as Garands.[:D]

If you get rid of it, your wife will remind you of it during an argument 15 years from now and tell you how much it really hurt her that you didn't like the gift she gave you. Women hold everything against you. Keep it and smile. It's a great gun.

Keep the Garand. I built a Carbine from an unissued USGI parts kit from Southeast Military Parts and got one of those new Springfield Armory receivers and had the Gunsmith attach and headspace the barrel the whole project cost me 550.00.... So I say Keep the Garand and build a M1 Carbine in the spring and get a CMP for Dad. They made over 6 million Carbines so don't worry about parts availability or finding a Carbine at a later date. Besides,, ITS A GIFT.. Tell your Wife she bought EXACTLY what you wanted and praise her for it.

Thank your lucky stars that you have such a great combination of wife and rifle. A good Garand can be hard to find, but a wife like that is even more difficult. Everytime you look at, touch, or just think about that M-1, it should remind you of just how much your wife loves you and respects your wants and wishes.

I see a couple of options. First, when I give someone a gift, it becomes their property to do with what they wish. As a gift giver I no longer have any rights to the property. A a gift recipient, I weigh the spirit of the gift when determining what I will do with it. I would never sell or trade a  "special" gift from my wife, child, parent or close friend.
You could/should keep the M-1 and buy the carbine "for her". As far as her "gift certificate" explanation goes, they always mean what they say but rarely say what they mean.

Keep the Garand. It's a gift from your wife.

Carbines are cheap, you can pick one up anytime. A nice Garand, however, is something you don't let go of.

I hardly touched my M1 Carbine after I got my AR. I finally traded it off Memorial Day for a .357 lever action.

Keep the Garand.

Glad you decided to keep it! When my budget permits, I will get one too.

However, I also want a carbine, because that's what my dad carried in WWII with the 10th mountain division in the mountains of Italy. White stock, white unitform, and skis...

Go to www.jouster.com and check out the CMP boards.  As far as a VAR barrel they are Danish IIRC, you probably have a Danish rifle that was given to Denamrk during the war and returned to the US sometime after.  From what I have gathered these are very desirable barrels and considered the best you can ask for on a "shooter" Garand.  The rifle looks pretty good too.  Stick with the Garand it's a classic and IMHO an elegant rifle to behold.

All top hand guards have alittle movement. The lock isnt suppose to tighten up completely. You turn it till it wont turn anymore(finger tight) and then reverse it to realign it and put in your gas plug. A var barrel in the Garand group is considered one of the Best barrels to have that was made for a Military rifle. It is considered one of the more accurate barrel produced for the militray rifles. Got a good one. War Dawg

Yeah, I see the smiley, but the M-1 carbine was carried by 10th mountain ski troops in WW2 Italy. My dad carried his behind enemy lines where he would intercept couriers to gather intel and locate targets for artillery.

Oh, and he said you couldn't hit shit with the carbine and was right, but a Garand when you're skiiing might be a bit much...

Carbines are cheap????  I don't know where you have been buying or what you have been buying, but a genuine USGI M1 Carbine will cost as much as a USGI Garand.

Keep the Garand, buy the carbine too.  I have two Garands and 1 carbine, all USGI, and wouldn't trade any of them.
