Whats so funny about it?

Like laughing at people who can't defend themselves?

As a father of a 6 yr old autistic son, I find that disgusting. And anyone who laughs at it is a POS.

Check out the columnists.  The "Ask a..." columns kill me.  Ask a Navy Seal, Ask a Gut-shot Policeman and Ask a Conspiracy Theorist are the best.  Not to mention the columns Smoove-B Jim Anchower and Herbert Kornfeld (Keep yo mutha-f***in' shit off my desk).  You have to click "archieves" at the top right to see them under "Advice."

I thought the piece was making fun of the Bush Administration and the way politicians and the media treat war and soldiers, not disabled children.  It's similar to how the Onion makes fun of some Christians by putting their words in God's mouth.  Some people get offended by that because they think the Onion is making fun of God.  I think they're missing the point.

It's not my place to tell you what you can or can't be offended by.  The Onion has a certain type of humor that a lot of people just don't catch on to.  Maybe it's not for everybody, but that doesn't make me a POS for having a laugh at politicians.

Well, the Christians can at least defend themselves.

This crappy piece of an article is clearly making fun of disabled kids/people.You can actually read that article and say that its not making fun of disabled kids/people?

A lot of the Onion pieces are written at two levels.  That's why I said it may not be for everybody because not everybody enjoys or gets that kind of humor.

When the Onion writes the pieces that make fun of Christians, a lot of Christians don't even get that they are being made fun of.  They think the Onion is making fun of God.  Which at the obvious level it is.  But that's not the point of the piece.

The point of the "Very Special Forces" piece was not to make fun of disabled people.  It's true that the piece did do that.  But that was not who they were ultimately making fun of.  I guess you can argue whether it's okay to make fun of God or disabled kids as a means of making a more subtle jab at someone else (politicians, Christians, etc.)  But most people who read the Onion once don't even realize that there is a second, more subtle humor present that is the actual point of the piece.  That's pretty much the reaction I see to every Onion piece, be it perceived as making fun of God, disabled kids, or someone else.

I can understand someone saying that it's still inappropriate even after they understand what's going on.  But a lot of people perceive the Onion as being out to be cruel, hateful, blasphemous, etc., just for the sake of cruelty, hate, blasphemy, and that's where I think they are wrong.
