They were in a 45 zone, the 15mph corner was a few hundred yards further down.

I too thought they must have been wringing the car out...

I have no fucking idea how you manage to do that to a car at 40-45mph, even if you did take a 15mph curve at that speed.

If they were in a 45mph zone... wtf happened? Aliens?

Oh lawd. Here come the conspiracy theorists.  Saw a YT video earlier of a couple grungy looking hipsters talking about how the "Illuminati" gave notice of this accident a few weeks ago in a Family Guy episode.  They also showed a clip of what they claim to be foreshadowing of the Boston marathon bombing, on an episode of American Dad that aired before the bombing.

Sure it is...but that's not what happened.

Red line is a 45mph zone and their direction of travel

Red circle is where they crashed

Green pointer is the 15mph corner

Which means that they were going that fast through the corner, and not after it like the sign says.

Do you understand how speed limits work?

Carbon fiber + possible power steering fluid soaked tires/engine + fuel tank directly behind passengers + hitting a tree sideways = bad things at nearly any speed I'm guessing

Blind corner into a straightaway. People probably have a tendency to speed up around there. Plus, they put up speed limit signs like they're going out of style  around here.
Sign just before entering corner-

But I just did the google street view thing (as if your driving the road)   Right near the church there is a 45mph sign..  The one they hit was a 35mph sign when google did the street view ( however the pic from the newspaper shows 45)

The 15mph zone ahead is actually a yellow warning ( advisory)  sign

I just saw on TMZ that they were doing 45mph, the tree was actually doing 65mph, so a total impact mph of +/- 110mph. Nearby surveillance photos show them street racing the tree before ultimately peaking out at 45mph(rev limiter) and losing the race. According to TMZ, a CGT is designed to break away in high impact crashes(30+mph)  and launch random parts 50+ feet away, so the story makes sense.

Thats the direction I was going by as well...     The sign google street view shows as 35 ( on the straight stretch before the hard right ) is the 45mph sign shown in the newspaper pic.   So It must have been changed to 45 since the time the google camera car drove there because the background building lines up with it.

I'd equate the Carrera GT's reputation to the old 917 or the early 911 Turbos. The 917 was a hairy-chested man car that involved brass balls to drive quickly, and if I remember correctly killed a driver in the 1969 Le Mans in the first lap. The Carrera GT is a lightweight, very powerful car with a monster V-10 that can easily overpower the rear tires, and I looking at Rodas' career from what I see, he's mostly been in sportscar based racers (Porsche Cup, Pirelli World Challenge) which I'd go on a limb to say handle nothing like a CGT would. While they did apparently co-own the car and probably had plenty of wheel time on it, I would have to say as a passenger I'd only feel remotely safe with someone wringing a CGT out on the streets like Walter Rörhl, Derek Bell, The Stig (pretty much any of the 3), or someone with LeMans prototype level experience. I have a sneaky feeling that CGT was going well above triple digits, and that the driver mashed too deep into the brakes. Even with ABS, a car like that could still lock up and plow off the intended path, even with big sticky tires.

Huh.

I really doubt carbon fiber was designed to withstand an impact at any speed, especially with that type of mass behind it.

I've waited upon hearing and reading everything I could about this before commenting. I watched the last 3 FnF movies
and was extremely entertained. I love cars and stunts with ass kicking scenes. The first few were pretty cheesy plots
but that charger stole the show anyway. The plots and acting not to mention the incredible stunts in the last 3 are leaps
and bounds better than the prior three. It sucks to have lost two guys that share a lifelong hobby as mine, and for
something overlooked and not thought upon in their haste. It's an incredible loss that they didn't deserve.
