There is a website that debunks all the gun myths, but I can't find it. It isn't guntruths.com, and it isn't gunlies.com. Anybody remember?
And suggestions are welcome. The business in question is a little hippie bookstore.

Half Price Books at 183 and Anderson Mill. I usually love going there, but after seeing that sign, I was a little sick, and left after 2 minutes.
BTW, the sign looks completely legal. It states the section of authority and everything. Not just a stupid red slash over a pistol.

Fuckers. Go across 183 to Heritage Firearms instead (I think they're on opposite sides of the highway). You'll find funner stuff there!

I will be using this thread to draft my letter. Any guilty bystanders, feel free to jump in if you see something you want to add.

1: Explanation of the premise that CHL holders are more law abiding than the citizenry as a whole.
2: Explanation of the premise that a sign creating a "gunfree" zone informs criminals that there will be no resistance to whatever kind of criminal activity they desire to inflict.
3: Explanation of the premise that the sign removes the protection of law abiding carrying gun owners.
4: Explanation of the premise that informing gunowners in the area will have the effect of a decrease in business levels.
[s]5: Informing them that if they should decide to continue to prohibit guns, they should do so legallly, because the sign as posted now has no legal merit or authority.[/s] The sign is legal and proper. I checked earlier.

1: CHL holders are 1/3 as likely as the average Texan to be arrested for a violent crime and 1/4 as likely to commit serious (property) crimes. CHL holders are approximately 11 times LESS likely to commit murder. In 1996 and 1997, only 5 Texas CHL holders were arrested for "dangerous/deadly discharge of a firearms". If permit holders were arrested for murder at the same rate as other adult Texans, 56 permit holders would have been arrested. Those 5 Texans arrested were for four deaths. Not only have there been no convictions resulting from those five arrests, TWO have been completely cleared of wrongdoing, and were determined to have acted in self-defense.

2: Concealed handgun laws save lives and reduce the threats that citizens face from rapes, robberies and assaults. Criminals tend to attack victims whom they perceive as weak, and guns can offset the differences in strength and serve as an important deterrent. Criminals victimize for money or power. In both cases there is a possibility that the sequence of events would end in the murder of the victim, for the purpose of eliminating a witness.

3: Criminals understand only one thing, and that is power. They fear the power to stop their ability to perpetrate criminal activity. Private citizens who carry a legal handgun have that power. The assumption that criminals must make, when an armed citizenry is the rule, is that everybody may be armed. This has a tremendous deterrant effect. Criminals do not attack those whom they perceive as powerful or more powerful than they are. There simply is too great a risk of getting shot and captured, or even killed while committing a crime.
Armed Citizens in your store have that power. You are protected by the assumption, even if none happen to be there at the moment.

4: If word got out that you viewed armed law abiding citizens the same as criminals, I believe it would have a detrimental effect on the number of people who were willing to do business at your store. I would assist in the effort to inform people of your misunderstanding of the nature of criminals, and that you believed that those who want to protect themselves are a threat to you. I have found many hard-to-find items of interest at your store. The CDs I have purchased from you number over 30, and I have bought at least 75 books over time. I know it would be a shame if I had to stop coming because you believe me a greater threat then a criminal.

You don't say what 30.06 IS, but I'm guessing it's a "don't carry in here" sign.

I don't want anyone to get robbed, but they should be nervous about it, now that they're advertising that nobody in there is CCW.

Ask them if they have one behind the counter. If no, they don't GAS about their customers' lives. If they do, they're being hypocritical.

Tell/send them the Luby's Story.

I'd be very nervous about shopping there.

It won't be long before someone shows up there seeming to be casing the joint. If you notice any unusual activity, be sure to phone the manager after you've gone to a safe, off-premise site.

I hope (and so should the employees and customers) that when they DO get robbed, the perp is a pro instead of an anxious crackhead or gang member. There are probably more of the ones that will shoot irrationally, though.

TSRA has a set of business cards just for this. It shows the circle through a pistol=a circle through a dollar sign. On the back of the card it list most of the points listed above. Just as a side note: I went by the Half Price Books in question. They indeed have a sign posting the 30.06(c)(3)(A) language, and it's on a yellow sheet of paper, with a title of something like "Prohibition of Handguns in Businesses or Entities" or some such.
The law states:

Penal Code Section 30.06(c)(3)(B) further states that a sign must meet the following requirements:

includes the language described by Paragraph (A) in both English and Spanish;

appears in contrasting colors with block letters at least one inch in height; and

is displayed in a conspicuous manner clearly visible to the public.

TECHNICALLY, according to Texas law, the sign is invalid, since the letters are NOT at least 1" high. It meets the other two requirements, though. I'd suppose you could carry legally in there, and they'd only be able to ask you to leave. Even though they're not in compliance, I probably won't carry there. Because I won't shop there. They can blow me.

I went by the Little Hippie Bookstore, and immediately noticed that the sign was [i]gone[/i].
I don't know if any of you other AR15.com'rs wrote, but when I delivered by letter by hand last month, the lady told me nobody else had ever complained. Guess it only takes one person.
Mission accomplished.
BTW, nobody ever called me. The sign could have come down two days after I delivered the letter, for all I know.

Crap, I forgot about this thread! I went in and had a nice conversation with one of the ladies behind the counter about their signs. I mentioned that even though we live in a pretty liberal city, that there were plenty of readers (and spouses of readers) around that would NOT patronize their store as long as that policy stood. I promptly forgot about it, and didn't even check back. Good show, DF!

I need to get some of those little business cards printed up (the one that says something like "We notice you don't allow CHL holders to carry in your store, so we'll respect your wishes and shop elsewhere). Anyone have a link for those?
