Now after seeing the press meetiung with the crew of the P3, all you people who ran your mouths about how chicken $hit they were should be eating your words. They did have plans initially to bail out and ditch, but the aircraft was in such a state that it would be impossible. Maybe that will end the Monday morning quarterbacking. If you are not there in the situation, perhaps you should hold your heroic opinions to yourself until you have the whole story in the future. Glad they are all back, and OK. Aviator

Here, here!!! I can't stand it when people, sitting safely behind their computers, second guess life and death decisions a half a world away.

OK, when is the pilot/commander going to be brought up on charges? Couldn't ditch but can make a landing on a runway and give up the plane. Ya thats the kind of hero we need.[V]

Excellent observation! BTW, where are the infamous critics? It would be nice if one of them would respond here, wouldn't it? [-!-!-]

I would like to know how many people on this board have been in a midair collision with the Chinese and had to decide wether to kill 24 people or land safely.

The reason they did not ditch, is because of the radome on the lower forward part of the airframe. the aircraft would flip end over as soon as it hits the water. the nose was also gone. They had no airspeed, or altimeter, very little control, and had just completed a 5,000 + uncommanded roll and dive. Had it just been 3 persons in the crew, they may have tried to ditch, but with the cabim full of people, no way. You may feel that dying for your country is heroic, but its just stupid. The goal it to make the other guy die for his. They had time and were able to destroy the most sensitive stuff on board. They did the right thing. Aviator

Excellent point, Garandshooter. In taking the time to land, you also have...time to destroy what needs to be destroyed. In ditching, there is always the chance that, while the crew is killed, something mya survive that you didn't want to. As it was, What needed to be destroyed was, the crew is alive, and we are not at war. Although from some of the posts I see, there are some here who are disappointed. (probably those who have "done their time", or never were military, past military age, and have no children of military age)
