Just bought one of these.  Tried to shoot some #7 target loads through it but it wouldn't cycle.  Does the gun just need to be broken in or is this gun only made for full power rounds?

Bet it has the short barrel? only heavy stuff. the longer tubes can handle the light stuff.

It has been my experience that the 1187P will shoot cheap birdshot field loads rather well and full power buckshot, but a lot of target loads and intermediate loads just do not give enough gas pressure to cycle.

3 1/4 dram 1 1/8 oz loads are minimum in a stock 1187. Most competitive shooters end up drilling the gas ports to get the gun to run on lighter loads (tactical slug/buckshot loads are typically as light as 3 dram 1 oz). My 1187SPST has .080" gas ports instead of the stock .072". It runs well on tactical loads as long as I keep it reasonably clean.
