Looks like the current high bidder is from California, so he'll probably have to have the belt fed Commie MG's replaced with welded in 10 round mags. ;-) http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&mfcisapicommand=ViewItem&item=1871775187

... that bird is in absolutely beautiful shape. ... gotta love it: "Supersonic flights in any aircraft over the US are limited to certain military test areas. We can get permission for buyer at China Lake and Edwards AFB."

CA, hmm? what would any decent human being NEED one of those for? They should clearly be banned to prevent criminal misuse.

Larry Ellison was going to buy a brand new MiG-29 from the Russians a few years ago, but the ATF wouldn't allow him. Total bullshit.

How is that under their jurisdiction? What it's now the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Airplanes....BATFA.

Clearly this weapon could easily be missused by gangs and drug dealers. Therefore, it should be banned. [rolleyes]

That's a steal if he gets it for $230,000. A brand new Cessna Skyhawk is $150,000+. Granted the Cessna is probably a whole lot more useful, but it can't go Mach 2.

ACK!!! LOOK AT THE BAYONET ON THAT THING!!! IT CAN CLEARLY BE USED ON FLY BY BAYONETTINGS!! BAN IT NOW!

Yeah, I dont know the details, but Ellison said it was the ATF. I guess the plane's hardpoints and systems weren't de-milled.

I agree. I hope the Bureau of Anything That Functions confiscates the thing and gives it to the DEA.

EBay allows miltary aircraft to be sold but no firearms!!!???!!! Go figure. Feedback from the seller's other auctions: "A trusted seller with great follow-through...I will be back for more!" More what? LOL. Is someone starting a squadran?

At least we know it's pre-ban.

If I recall, these things have either 20mm or 37mm, or both, cannons.

I've heard of MiG-21s going for $50k. Me, I'd save up for a T-38 in this case. Assuming I had some sort of cash flow.

That's true, but imagine the fuel consumption! I wonder how much a fill'er up costs, not to mention maintaining it. It would be pretty dang cool though!!

actually, there is a law that restricts guns on aircraft from civilians. i can't recall the exact wording but it is to prevent air piracy. so no matter if the guns were registered before '86 or not, they would still need to be removed in order to pass FAA inspections/ ian

at Ellington Field here in Houston there's at least 1 Chinese MIG17 that a fellow owns & allegedly he takes it out over the Gulf to go supersonic. Apparently when he does that he barely has enough fuel to get back to the field to land. I've sat in that one & there was a second one in the hanger but I can't remember if it was being restored or if it was a "parts" plane.

Running out of fuel over open water would be a real bitch — and it's not like they're going to have an aircraft carrier circling in the area to search for you, either! Take one well-used aircraft designed with stolen and ad-hoc technology, manufactured by a nearly-broke nation, maintained by underpaid technicians, documented entirely in a foreign language, shipped to the US under dubious circumstances, and flown by someone with only second-hand knowledge of its idiosyncrasies, and you've got a pretty good recipe for disaster. Sure glad I'm not the guy's life insurance underwriter.

Id purchase it but.... I don't see the factory 8-track quadraphonic sound system installed. How the heck am I supposed to go supersonic in a commie jet if I cant listen to Dmitry Shostakovich, Sergey Prokofiev or Aram Khachaturian in style.

NAS Fallon NV, bought (or traded for) an export version of the MIG-29 for their Air Museum. It was owned by a private party in California, and I was told it had been listed on E-Bay. I had the chance to look it over very close, it's amazing how the Soviets designed and built the darn thing. One item stuck out and that was the use of compression bolts and non-flush rivits on exterior surfaces in the construction of the aircraft. I could see that having it be bolted together would facilitate easy repair by just about anyone with a set of wrenches. Compared to our current aircraft a Soviets farmer could unbolt a damaged structure while on a US aircraft it would take special tools and skilled labor. A very cool aircraft. No engines or avionics though. For a lot cheaper (US $29,000.00) you could buy a Mig-17: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1871929068
