Those "abysmal" vehicles were used to conquer most of Europe and made it all the way to the gates of Moscow before Herr Schicklegruber, a corporal in WWI, took operational command of the armies in the east. If German vehicles were mechanically unreliable it was because there was no time to work out the bugs before being thrown into combat.

Europe was not conquered by the vehicles. At the beginning of the war British and French tanks were of equal power and armor protection, and both the British and the French had more tanks than the Germans. The real difference in the Wehrmacht was the tactics and the quality of training. German troops just had much better instruction than Allied troops. Their equipment sucked, for lack of a better word. German troops had superior tactics and vastly superior training, so even though their vehicles were of low quality, the troops were able to work around the deficiencies.
The only truly good tank the Germans produced as a total package (balanced armament, armor protection, and speed) was the Panther. The Tiger and King Tiger were slow behemoths that really weren't a match for the much better T-34. The Sherman was a piece of junk from a war fighting point of view. It was as reliable as the family car and could easily be maintained by the crew, but it's inadequate armor protection, gasoline fuel system (gasoline vapors explode, diesel is hard to even burn), and anemic gun made it no match for [i]any[/i] tank. It was simple though, allowing it to be produced in huge quantities. It was also easy to repair, which made it fast to back in action after you mop out the mess and repaint the interior.
