How many kids has the phone-based Amber Alert system saved?

How many has the highway sign-based system saved?

I think it's a good thing, but I also think you should have the option of disabling it, or at least turning off the "OMG IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD" screeching notification and have it just pop up in the notification bar.

Quite a few. I don't have the actual numbers but I have seen many news stories where the abductor was spotted and reported by Joe Blow. Having thousands of eyes on the road makes for a broader search net than LE can normally cast.

Boise got one a few weeks ago for the teenage girl and family friend who murdered her mother and brother.  The amber alert we received was initiated after the car they were driving was found by law enforcement in a remote area.  The only information contained in the amber alert was a description of the car and it's license plate number that was already in police custody.

I leave mine on. I've only got one alert in the four or five years I've had an iPhone.

It's only been on the iPhone since around June of this year, and has to be a recent version of iOS so older devices aren't likely to get them anyway.

The best part? It just tells you there's an amber alert, it doesn't give you the details.

I don't have an i-phone on at night.

Don't even have an i-phone actually.

Cheap cell phone (which is off at night) and land-line for the win.  (at least until the day amber alerts call your land-line, cell phone, take over the computer if it's on, and turn on the tv with the message blaring)

It was an Amber Alert for an area over 150 miles away.  WTF?

What doesn't make sense is the alert message appears on the screen but as you touch the phone, the message disappears is not stored on the phone anywhere.  You don't get a chance to read or write down the information.

I got my first alert a few weeks ago. Just about gave me a heart attack. I've had the same ringtone for close to 5 years and I'd never heard this screeching one.
It was for flooding. it was barely raining at all.
Yep, disabled that one, kept the amber alert one. -  I do wish they allowed you to set it to your normal ringtone.

I believe if you swipe down from the top of your home screen, all notifications will appear so you can read them.

What you're getting is just a notification that you have a new message.

I've never received one so I'm not 100% sure, but other notifications work that way.

Put your finger on the top of the home screen and swipe down.

What is so stupid is that the message disappears as soon as you touch the phone.  Makes no sense.

Yup.  High Point is an close to 2 hours away.

Because no kidnapper has ever driven two hours away?

I could understand if it was an alert to an active shooter 200 miles away. That's unlikely to become a rolling gun battle. However a kidnapper trying to leave might pass through your area and if you're on a late night ammo run you might see him.

I understand the thought behind it, but the vast majority of people who are going to receive that alert in the middle of the week at 1am are going to be asleep. Itd be much more effective to not come through like an air raid siren at 1am, because Im sure most people did what I did, and quickly got rid of it to make the noise stop. If it came through like a normal text Idve read it this morning when I woke up and probably remembered the details and been able to keep them in the back of my mind on the drive to work...

While reading this thread I've realized Arfcom has gone full retard. It's gone. The mouth breathing, neck beard retards have become the majority. They can't be disrupted from whatever they are doing to see what a potentially abducted child might be stowed away in. I'd sure hate to see one of you guy that actually has a real, not pretend, family lose a child to an abductor and everyone on the highway sees the truck with your kid gagged and scared to death in the back seat BUT they were interrupted some sleep, sex, tv, world of tanks, or whatever else you guys do so they have no idea that truck is wanted.

Sorry you didn't get your full 10 hours of sleep. If you are unable to operate on a rare interupted sleep night then man up and learn how to. When the conservative moralistic side of the country can't be bothered with a small interruption to possibly help a child I worry about our state of affairs. You're no better than the FSA and the jokes about American idol or dancing with the stars.

It's a child for Pete's sake.

I got an Amber Alert the other day, and while I don't mind getting them, I do mind the freaking shrill of the audible alert.  I went into settings to see if I could find something not so "Emergency Broadcast System death tone", and see all the different emergency alert types my phone can receive.  There are 4 listed with one of them being "Presidentail alerts".  Guess which one I cannot disable?  That's right, the one from our herpaderp President.  I guess that is how he plans to declare Marshal Law in a few years, notify me that elections are suspended, and he's coming for my guns.

I'm on a Verizon Galaxy S3.  Anyone else not able to disable Presidental Alerts?

Your post makes it clear that you lack both basic reading comprehension and common sense.  I'd attempt to once again explain why people are pissed off about this, but I'm not sure you could hear it from the height at which you ride your horse.  Further, you seem to be deliberately ignoring any arguments as to why delivering messages in this manner is a bad idea and will do more to hinder cooperation than it will to aid in finding a lost or abducted child.

In other words, your post was real retarded, sir.

However, if you feel so strongly about this new alert system, please post your home number and I'll be happy to call you and read the message each time I receive an alert.  It's for a child, for Pete's sake.

It's not getting the alert that most people are perturbed about, its waking them up in the middle of the night. If you are at home asleep, getting an amber alert isn't helping anyone, because you aren't going to go out and start looking.

It should come in like a normal text message.

And the 'its for the children' schtick has cost this country untold trillions and lost liberties. If that's the sole basis for ANYTHING, its a waste of time.

This.

Also, make it an opt in feature and launch a PR campaign about it. Then the folks that want to participate can (and it might be a higher number than folks that learn about this "feature" by having their phone scare the living daylights out of them at some random time).

I really think they screwed up the overall effectiveness of Amber Alerts.

1.  They started using it in a manner that woke people up in their homes at 3:00 in the morning, so people turned the alerts off on their weather radios and phones.  Now they don't get the alerts on their phones when they are out and about.  Amber alerts make sense on highway signs and the radio.

2.  in 2011, 51% of the amber alerts were "family abductions".  While family member's may indeed be a threat, I don't know if the threats from family member cross the threshold required of Amber Alerts.  I can see those issuing the alerts wanting to err on the side of caution, but the more you use it in the middle of the night, the more people tend to ignore them.

Hey, if the wolf isn't at scratching at the door and the boy shrieks wolf at 3 AM most people will make the boy shut up. Just so happens with these phones the boy shuts up permanent. Arfcom, where we bitch and whine about the manhunt in Boston because we were told to stay in our homes while the "authorities" did the search.  Then, we bitch and whine when we get some sort of public alert in the middle of the night for something where the public is still asked to help.

I guess the arf militia concept wold work just fine for the next manhunt, but don't bother us unless during business hours, and definitely not on weekends.

Amber Alerts have been ruined by non-custodial parent "kidnappings".  They've become like car alarms, and nobody pays real attention any more.  Save them for "real" kidnappings, in my opinion.

A young lady got the alert, recognized the vehicle and the child was safely returned to her family.

So much for the "worthless intervention."

To be more accurate, she saw an SUV with a crying child inside.  She then went to her apartment, woke her roommate, and checked the Amber Alert message.  There's no way to say in this instance that the screeching alert was any more effective than if it was sent as a normal text.  And honestly, who sees a crying child alone in a vehicle and then leaves?

I don't think anyone is bitching about receiving a message so much as they're bitching about having their phone unnaturally screech at them at 1:00 AM.

Don't care. not my kid. I do not have kids. Not my responsibility. at 4 am I am asleep and at home. how I am going to spot an abducted kid when I'm at home sleeping?

You and the government do not have the right to disturb my sleep, sleep I need to be able to function and do my job. electronic highway signs for Amber and silver alert? all for em. because people who ARE ACTUALLY OUT AT 4AM AND DOING SOMETHING MIGHT BE ABLE TO HELP. People who are sawing logs at 4am are not. all it does is do exactly what happened in this thread. people turn it off.

that’s certainly the pot calling the kettle black there, collectivist.
