Boise got one a few weeks ago for the teenage girl and family friend who murdered her mother and brother. The amber alert we received was initiated after the car they were driving was found by law enforcement in a remote area. The only information contained in the amber alert was a description of the car and it's license plate number that was already in police custody.

I got it as well.
Slept right thru it Did it again around 6:10 at the coffee shop |

View Quote It's only been on the iPhone since around June of this year, and has to be a recent version of iOS so older devices aren't likely to get them anyway. The best part? It just tells you there's an amber alert, it doesn't give you the details. |

I don't have an i-phone on at night.
Don't even have an i-phone actually. Cheap cell phone (which is off at night) and land-line for the win. (at least until the day amber alerts call your land-line, cell phone, take over the computer if it's on, and turn on the tv with the message blaring) |

I got my first alert a few weeks ago. Just about gave me a heart attack. I've had the same ringtone for close to 5 years and I'd never heard this screeching one.
It was for flooding. it was barely raining at all. Yep, disabled that one, kept the amber alert one. - I do wish they allowed you to set it to your normal ringtone. |

While reading this thread I've realized Arfcom has gone full retard. It's gone. The mouth breathing, neck beard retards have become the majority. They can't be disrupted from whatever they are doing to see what a potentially abducted child might be stowed away in. I'd sure hate to see one of you guy that actually has a real, not pretend, family lose a child to an abductor and everyone on the highway sees the truck with your kid gagged and scared to death in the back seat BUT they were interrupted some sleep, sex, tv, world of tanks, or whatever else you guys do so they have no idea that truck is wanted.
Sorry you didn't get your full 10 hours of sleep. If you are unable to operate on a rare interupted sleep night then man up and learn how to. When the conservative moralistic side of the country can't be bothered with a small interruption to possibly help a child I worry about our state of affairs. You're no better than the FSA and the jokes about American idol or dancing with the stars. It's a child for Pete's sake. |

I got an Amber Alert the other day, and while I don't mind getting them, I do mind the freaking shrill of the audible alert. I went into settings to see if I could find something not so "Emergency Broadcast System death tone", and see all the different emergency alert types my phone can receive. There are 4 listed with one of them being "Presidentail alerts". Guess which one I cannot disable? That's right, the one from our herpaderp President. I guess that is how he plans to declare Marshal Law in a few years, notify me that elections are suspended, and he's coming for my guns.
I'm on a Verizon Galaxy S3. Anyone else not able to disable Presidental Alerts? |

I really think they screwed up the overall effectiveness of Amber Alerts.
1. They started using it in a manner that woke people up in their homes at 3:00 in the morning, so people turned the alerts off on their weather radios and phones. Now they don't get the alerts on their phones when they are out and about. Amber alerts make sense on highway signs and the radio. 2. in 2011, 51% of the amber alerts were "family abductions". While family member's may indeed be a threat, I don't know if the threats from family member cross the threshold required of Amber Alerts. I can see those issuing the alerts wanting to err on the side of caution, but the more you use it in the middle of the night, the more people tend to ignore them. |
|
Don't mind the fact that I can get those alerts. What REALLY pisses me off is that I can't disable presidential/government alerts.
