Been there, done that.
Took the wife and the Honda CRV out into the low desert for a few hundred rounds of fun in the sun. The weather was sunny and about 72 degrees with just the slightest amount of wind.
Zeroed my Aimpoint Comp ML a top my Ruger Mini-14 and did some nice tight ten round five inch groups from 104 yards away.
Zeroed a Weaver scope above my Ruger 10/22 with a new .920" diameter Butler Creek barrel and did some nice tight ten round 0.5" groups at 60 yards.
Did my normal bang the gong exercise where I engage a 12" square rifle gong at about 50-75 yards free standing, walk back another 50 or more yards and do the same rice patty prone or sitting and then double that again and so some slow fire prone out over a rock. Repeat back and forth until the pockets run out of ammo. It's good practice ranging targets, doping the wind and bullet drop and getting off COM shots. The gong gives near instant feedback - I know I've missed when I see the sand kick up (damn 5 MOA rifle anyway).
Using the 10/22 is a kick as you really have to raise the front end at 200 yards and the time delay between the shot, the impact, and the sound from the gong is a blast.
Tried out the range finder against my Mk.1 Mod.1 eyeball guesses. Close enough after a bit of tuning.
Found that it's pretty damn hard to put a silk parachute over a freshly waxed car in a slight amount of wind. The OD parachute did bunches to hide my bright silver truck. The silk does have a bit of sheen to it and I've got some netting coming to help with that. The OD didn't stick out too bad beyond 350 yards in the brownish desert scrub.
Found that if you pack the truck up and start driving away from where your wife and dog are lounging about 300 yards away that she'll panic. I was just gathering up the targets 200 yards distant.
Found out that an hour drive home with a pissed off wife isn't as much fun as it sounds.
