Basically they trained dogs to look for treats under tanks. The dogs would have a explosive vest on and the idea was they would run under German tanks looking for treats and the Russians would detonate the dog and blow up the tank.

Of course in actual battle the dogs usually ran under the more familiar Russian tanks they had trained with and were shot by the frustrated Russsians who trained them.
