CNN.."Law enforcement sources say suspects' car had hole bored in trunk that would allow weapon to be fired from inside car."

It would have to be a pretty big hole to be able to see and shoot thru using a scoped AR.

Hmm.  The news showed footage of the car being unloaded from the trailer a little while ago.  Trunk was clearly visible.  No hole in sight.  I think the "hole" is the hole where the lock used to be before it got punched out with an impact hammer (so they could break into the trunk).  If they did shoot from the trunk area with the seat down, wouldn't they just open the trunk or prop it up a little and then pull it shut as they drive away?  That would give a much better field of view.  Besides, you can't fire a scoped AR through a tiny hole.

"Found with the gun was a tripod that steadies the gun, the high-ranking source said. Several law enforcement sources also said the Chevrolet Caprice they were found in had been modified in some way to create a hole in the car that they could shoot through. One source said the modification allowed access to the trunk from inside."

Spoken by one who's old enough to have sneaked into drive-in movies in the trunk, it would be easier to just pop the latch from the inside and crack the trunk lid to shoot.

MSNBC reports:

Law enforcement sources told Williams that the car had been modified to make it easy for a person to shoot from the car without being detected. The back seat could be lowered and the trunk opened for a clear shot from the back of the car, the sources said.

Law enforcement officers surround the car which John Allen Muhammad and John Lee Malvo were in when police arrested them at a rest stop near Myersville, Maryland October 24, 2002. The two men arrested in connection with the hunt for the sniper in the Washington, D.C., area did not appear to be linked to any group, police said on Thursday. (Brendan McDermid/Reuters)

Must be a pre-ban assault sedan.  Where's the outcry for car control laws now that we see how easy it is to convert a civilian car to a fully automatic assault vehicle?

We need to ban these semi- AUTOMATIC tactical assault sniper Chevy's!...Complete with quad-pods...You know the things where those four round things go to stabilize it! Also complete with a muzzle BRAKEs to make it more controllable! Heck it even had those Laser Infrawhite Ground Hugging Transmitters...to the unimformed we call them head-LIGHTS.

Where is the outrage![soapbox]

The car in the picture has no hole in the trunk.
That is because the feds havent put it there yet.
When they get dune it will have a turet on top for 180 degres of fire.  And port holes.

As a former owner of a 77 two door Caprice Classic, I have only one question. In what year did they put the fold down seats on the Caprice?  I damn sure didn't have them on mine and after being in the car business for damn near 10 years I cant remember seeing them on any caprice. Anyone???

I always thought that moonroofs in cars and sliding rear windows in pickups were put there for that.  I have been doing it wrong!

I have made many police units from these cars, they never had a fold down rear seat, even the police package cars that Chevy made up thru 1991 (they made that body style for police use even after they changed to the "bathtub".) my $.02

I just heard that the car is a 1990 model, IIRC 1990 and 91 were the last years for that body style and were police package only.

I think what they are saying is that the rear seat was modified to fold down and you could fire through the open trunk from inside the car.  I don't think there is a hole.

Because it has a high rear sill there are a number of places a port could be cut. And even if the rear seat doesn't fold, he could cut a hole through it.

Muhammed is a machineist by training. Since leaving the Army he tried to start a custom auto parts company but it flopped.

He could simply have MADE a folding seat conversion and a trunk port with a covering door.

But putting the port behind the license plate-which is where the fuel filler is on those old Caprices if memory serves- would make more sense since the plate is already on a moveable mount that could cover the port as well as the fuel filler.

Another place would be behind one of the tail lights. It would look from the outside that it just had a broken brake light. Probably on the right side for a right handed shooter.

I've been doing a little research on high velocity assault sedans today.  Apparently, this particular model is equipped with collapsable mounts at each wheel with hydraulic dampeners to stabilize the chassis.  That makes it the perfect killing platform.  Not only that, the front two wheels can be fully adjusted from the driver's seat and they even have a high power servo to make it easier to precisely aim the entire car to maximize its lethality.

Now hold on to your hats, here's the scary part -- this killing machine has an effective range of nearly 400 miles and can pack up to 1 MILLION foot-pounds of energy; enough to kill thousands of school children!

At the very least, we need to be requiring all car manufacturers to submit tire prints to the FBI for future positive identification.  Ultimately, we must make sure criminals can never acquire these terrifying weapons by making it impossible for any civilian to legally possess one.
