Ooooooooo..if the pictures turn out to be true...say goodbye to Davis! LOS ANGELES (AP) - The executive director of a law enforcement group that endorses Republican gubernatorial nominee Bill Simon said today he had two photos showing then Lt. Gov. Gray Davis accepting a campaign contribution in his state Capitol office -- in violation of the law. Monty Holden, head of the California Organization of Police and Sheriffs, told reporters the Jan. 31, 1998, photos show Davis, then campaigning for his first term as governor, accepting a $10,000 check from Al Angele, then executive director of COPs. The photos show Davis standing next to a man identified by COPS as Angele. They are holding either side of a $10,000 check as they stand in an office, that according to COPS, was the lieutenant governor's office. The claims are ``false and possibly slanderous,'' Davis campaign press secretary Roger Salazar said. ``This charge is categorically false. No such exchange of campaign funds took place inside then Lt. Gov.'s Davis' Capitol office in Sacramento.'' Davis said the meeting took place in his campaign office in Los Angeles, which would not be illegal. Simon initially made the allegation Monday after the candidates met in Los Angeles for their first debate before the Nov. 5 election. But Tuesday, Simon backed away from the allegations, saying it was a matter between COPS and the Fair Political Practices Commission. ``It's not my allegation ... this is California Organization of Police and Sheriffs speaking, not me,'' Simon said KGO-AM. During the debate, Davis cast Simon as too conservative for California and Simon accused Davis of running a corrupt and failed administration. ``Mr. Simon is a true-blue, think-tank conservative. ... He is simply out of step with the values of most Californians,'' the Democratic governor said in his opening remarks at Monday's hourlong debate sponsored by the Los Angeles Times. Simon responded by accusing Davis of linking policy decisions to campaign donations, mismanaging the state's energy crisis and turning a budget surplus into a $23.6 billion deficit. ``What the people of California deserve to hear, but what they probably won't from Mr. Davis, is an apology,'' Simon said, `` ... an apology to all Californians for a disastrous four years in office.'' During a news conference after the debate, Simon said he had evidence about Davis and the illegal campaign contribution. He said there was a letter from COPS to the Fair Political Practices Commission. Before Simon's staff could produce the letter, filed earlier Monday, Davis aides contacted the former member it named and he categorically denied the claim. Sorry to burst your bubble, but this won't amount to anything. 1) This happens all the time. Republicans and Democrats alike. Its a dumb law and no one enforces it. 2) Laws don't apply to Democratic politicians. Evidence = New Jersey. No big deal, no one will care, won't even bee a blip on the radar screen. --LS

Hoisted by his own petard? It turns out that that pic might not have been taken on government property. It is looking like this stunt is about to blow up in Simon's face. Simon pretty much just had to sit back and let Davis screw things up, but Simon can't help but put his foot in his mouth at every opportunity. The Republicans screwed up and didn't give Simon good support early. He is a total political rookie and needed much better advice than he was getting. They also sat back and let Davis hammer him with attack ads, while Simon ran a few pathetic commercials. Simon is running ads now, but it is probably too little too late. [xx(]

On NPR this morning (of all places) they quoted the head of the NEA in the PRK as saying that Davis, in the middle of one of their monthly "policy briefings", told them "Oh by the way, I'll need $1,000,000 from you this year" They were dumbfounded, and the Davis campaign says its a lie, but the NEA has no reason to do anything to get a Republican elected. The guy has raised $56 million through some very shady practices that even have the demonrats a little nervous. well, not totally true. violation of the law, regardless of its "stupidity" level says something about the character of a man. condoning that violation says the same thing. and you can bet i care. now, whether anything will be done about it is another story. and the law should probably be looked at. there is such a such as a stupid law. like the pre-marital blood test for rubella. rubella for cryin' out loud. who the hell cares about AIDS. oh, heck no. we're worried about that chick passing on rubella to her innocent victim-husband. nevermind that there are a million other things more dangerous than rubella and that we all get vaccinated for it as a child. grrrr. sorry. that's my rant for the day. have had more problems with that dern pre-marital rubella test than any other aspect of planning this wedding. [rolleyes]

I have to agree with previous posters here that it wont stick... Sad as it is. common sheeple idiots here pay 2-3 times more for electricity, KNOW that Davis is a moron yet, still vote for him anyway. I am just hoping REALLY HOPING that Simon has a card up his sleeve.

You are correct. The Lt. Governors office, which has not changed since davis used it, has dark wood paneling on the walls and very few pictures. The pic that is being presented as "evidence" does not resemble that room at all. You all kalidiots are going to get davis for another term. No, ifs, ands or buts.
